Los Angeles ambulance crews told not to transport patients who stand little chance of survival

With intensive care units at Southern California hospitals nearly full because of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Los Angeles County Emergency Medical Services Agency (EMS) has directed ambulance crews not to transport patients with little chance of survival to hospitals, and to conserve the use of oxygen.

Los Angeles and Southern California are dealing with one of the country's worst outbreaks of the novel coronavirus. ICU bed capacity plunged to 0% in Southern California last month, as more and more people were admitted to hospital seeking treatment for Covid-19.

Now, many medical facilities simply do not have the space to take in patients who do not have a chance of survival, according to the agency.

As of Monday evening, there were 7,544 people hospitalized in Los Angeles due to Covid-19 and just 17 available adult ICU beds, according to county health data. Due to the shortage of beds, the county EMS said patients whose hearts have stopped, despite efforts of resuscitation, should no longer be transported to hospitals.

If there are no signs of breathing or a pulse, EMS will continue to perform resuscitation for at least 20 minutes, the EMS memo said. If the patient is stabilized after the period of resuscitation, the patient would then be transported to a hospital. If the patient is declared dead at the scene or if no pulse can be restored, paramedics will no longer transport the body to the hospital.

Oxygen shortage: A shortage of oxygen in Los Angeles and the nearby San Joaquin Valley, thanks to Covid-19, is putting immense pressure on the system and forcing paramedics to conserve the supply.

In order to maintain normal circulation of the blood to organs and tissue needed for the body to function, EMS said an oxygen saturation of at least 90% will be sufficient.

The average death rate for COVID in the USA is 1.7%. Should be 0% like Singapore. Plus, we’ve essentially cured the flu last year with an 89% drop in flu deaths, for 2020.

Look at the savings in SS and Medicare alone.

I thought they were doing that on purpose. :-)

Select Los Angeles County and scroll to hospital data.

They’ve got hundreds of ICU beds available at the moment.

Right; that is actually what drives “assisted suicide” laws. Socialism relies on a mass of producers providing for elites while consuming as little as possible of the goods and services they’ve been promised.

ObamaCare is a case in point; it jacked up costs while providing health INSURANCE, not health CARE (which has become even more expensive).

I think, most certainly, SoCal should stop taking migrants from south of the border and giving them treatment over citizens if they want to keep the ICU open.

Plus, couldn’t other parts of the state “donate” O2? Surely the entire state isn’t dry of oxygen tanks.

What is wrong with people? Seriously. At this point, it’s rudimentary math.

Most all the border town hospitals are full. It isn’t from USA side but Mexico.
I hear the lower Rio Grande Valley in Texas has no hospital beds either.

Key words here are “staff availability”. Because of “you have been exposed, you get to go home for two weeks with extra hazard pay just in case” most medical facilities are way understaffed all the time. A standard dictated by liability insurance companies, possible criminal neglect charges, and/or loss of health professional licenses.

Unless you are an illegal alien who has been convicted of a major crime and released, as they get preemptive treatment.

But with the high survival rate, and the fact that most of the deaths seem to be among folks who might actually be done in by the common cold, it’s really hard to tell.

I wonder how many actual new cases there are in places with “spikes” (whether in a wide-open State or a tightly locked State). Unless they check a database to insure folks are not double counted, I can picture someone testing positive and feeling fine deciding to go to another testing facility to do it again - and perhaps being counted as a new case - and maybe folks who had it then going to test to see if they have antibodies and having the presence of antibodies being counted as a reportable case.

The method of testing and reporting of cases is as clear and open as the election process in the coup States.

The biggest problem for hospitals and ems isn’t calling it in the field for dying patients. It’s the idiots who call 911 as soon as they *think* they might have covid. These are same people who treat the hospital ed as their primary care doctor - all of them on state medicaid with free rides to the hospital. Ambulance crews are still de-contaminating their ambulances after these chicken littles have already been booted from the ED.

Why would they delay transport to a more skilled setting?

Mostly because they’re not going to do anything in the ED for that type of cardiac arrest that can’t be done prehospital. There’s no point transporting a dead body to an emergency room. This is not a novel EMS policy.

This is all fear mongering.

They lump data together from different locales and different states to magnify how things look.

Yet that magnification is a lie, in the vast majority of local jurisdictions.

I have friends and relatives in seven jurisdictions in southern California. None of the extremes of case numbers or hospitalizations are happening there.
