Millions of Americans moved during the pandemic - and most aren't looking back

Americans fled big cities in droves to escape the coronavirus pandemic — and many of them are staying, permanently or indefinitely. But escape means something different depending on whom you ask.

The top destination cities as of October and November were Sacramento, California; Las Vegas; Phoenix; Austin, Texas; and Atlanta, according to the real estate site Redfin. Interest is particularly high for Austin, where double the number of people moved this year compared to last year.

Some South and Southwestern states, which had fewer lockdown restrictions, added people fleeing more restrictive counties and states for both economic and ideological reasons.

Jehna Powell, 23, a bartender and gym employee, recently moved from Eaton, Colorado, to Pensacola Beach, Florida.

"I can't stand living in Colorado anymore. The governor does not have the best interest for small businesses and people born and raised in Colorado," Powell said in an online message.

During a recent trip to Florida, she fell in love with the warmer weather and decided to make the jump with her dog this summer. While the cost of living is about the same as in Eaton, Powell said she enjoys the "simpler life" and hopes bartending income will pick up next summer.

In Florida, people are "happy ... being able to do what they see necessary as far as protecting themselves," Powell said. For example, the bar she works at doesn't mandate wearing masks.

An acquaintance whom i know to be a registered Republican just moved from San Francisco to Austin.

Did he/she live in the City itself or just over the San Mateo County line (or maybe in close-in Marin [Sausalito])?

And is he/she a RINO?

Does SF actually *have* non-RINO Pubbies?

State and local taxes. I believe many people were going to be hit hard in certain areas due to changes in taxation.

I lost my job and saw an opportunity to find another one and I specifically looked at out of state areas that had a lower cost of living. I will probably save about 5 to 6K a year in taxes here and about 5K less a year in mortgage payments for a house of similar size and quality.

Just when we’ve been told that everyone was moving to the cities, living in tiny spaces, and the suburbs were dead, we see that people are leaving cities because they “want more space”.

“Experts” wrong again. It seems the term “expert” indicates a person who makes up things he likes and speaks them with (assumed) authority. If you hear a fart, its probably just an “expert” talking from his a** again.

We live in a small college town in Appalachia and we are moving west one county. We are tired of the craziness of college life. The hippies have been replaced by organized liberal anarchists. At any moment, they can rise up and tear down a statue or stop traffic. The liberals running the town use them like Brownshirts. Covid has turned everyone here into Karens who try to out-fascist one another.
The county west of us is solid Trump country and they don’t play the governor’s games.

I wonder how much those experts were analyzing people's desires vs. trying to shape them. In my opinion the “new urbanists” were a few ideologues who were trying to convince everyone that “all the cool kids are moving into the city so you should/must too.” Anyone I knew who fell for it scurried back out to the suburbs as soon as they had kids and thought about where they could play or go to school.

“a HUGE amount are moving to Austin and they ain’t conservatives.
ANYONE I’ve known who’s moved to Austin is LEFT.
And Atlanta...more Leftists.
and New York has PLENTY of leftists to spare and STILL go dem in potus elections.
It’s terrible.”

It is terrible. They move and bring their rotten politics with them. I lived in Atlanta in the 80s and it was a great place (except for traffic). I still visit and it is a “sh!!hole” today — in many ways.

Check out this site: https://nomadcapitalist.com/. This guy is all over YouTube and apparently has a thriving business helping people leave the country. He renounced his citizenship and packed his bags and left and now helps others do the sam.

IF you are considering moving-—Check out Penske rates before just getting a U-Haul.

VAST price differences & payload differences.

Payload on ‘26’ foot’ U-Haul==7800#

Payload on 26’ Penske truck= 17,000#

I was at the electronics school on Treasure Island in ‘62 and ‘63. Frisco was rather wacky back then but it was magic. I was tempted to go back after my discharge but I was back on the East coast by then so I went home to Carolina.
