Louisiana Rep.-elect Luke Letlow, who died while battling COVID-19, suffered a heart attack following a procedure, a hospital official said.

The 41-year-old was receiving treatment in the intensive care unit at Ochsner LSU Health in Shreveport when he died Tuesday, the Monroe News-Star reported.

LSU Health Shreveport Chancellor G.E. Ghali confirmed Letlow underwent an operation related to the virus and later went into cardiac arrest.

“was bedbound for around 10 days before noticing a sharp pain in his right foot.”

That was likely due to deep vein thrombosis (DVT). If you don’t get up and move around periodically you get a blood clot in your leg. If it breaks loose, it’s going to stick in the first narrow place it finds.

People who look at the data and determine their personal risk are not in denial about the potential severity of the virus. They may have calculated that they are willing to live their lives as if they have a 2% chance of dying from covid.

Others who have seen a friend or family member become one of those 2% who die are understandably shaken to the core and more likely to live life as if a 2% chance of dying from covid is actually a much higher risk.

Objectively, people in the first group are living life based on reason, while people in the second group are living life based on emotion.

It is not rational to deny that the virus exists or has the potential to be fatal, even in low-risk groups. Neither is it rational to extrapolate that you are going to die from covid if you get it because you know someone in a low-risk group who did.

Suppose you have cancer and the stats say that with treatment you have an 85% chance of surviving 5 years. You can live your life in fear that you’re one of the 15% who dies within 5 years or you can live as if you’re in the 85% survival group.

It’s not denying that cancer can kill you if you opt for the latter.

There is an oxygen exchanger alternative to ventilators, but it requires an operation to use it. I don’t recall the name of the device, but your lungs don’t even have to move, as I recall (hopefully correctly).

It might be that doctors were trying to insert this and a blood clot or other complication occurred, causing his heart attack.

Sorry, JN but I disagree. A virus with a 99.97% survival rate (0.03% fatality) is not a pandemic. COVID’s fatality is just slightly higher by 0.02% than the seasonal flu, but we don’t lockdown the country during flu season.

Also, the reported number of COVID deaths is skewed because the CDC has directed hospitals/coroners to classify every death as due to COVID if the virus is present in the person’s body even though they have no symptoms.

For example, a person has Stage IV cancer (termanilly I’ll) and dies, but the coroners detects COVID in the blood, cause of death is listed as COVID.

A person dies in a car accident but has COVID in their blood, cause of death is COVID.

A person committs suicide but has COVID in their blood, cause of death is COVID.

Furthermore, if hospitals/coroners used the same criteria for flu deaths the numbers would be almost identical to COVID numbers because each and every one of us is carrying a strand of the flu virus in our blood. Some of us are susceptible to it. Some are not. Yet anywhere between 40,000 to 80,000 people in the USA die from the flu every year.

One final fact: 1.5 to 1.6 million people die from disease or viruses in the US every year. Since the onset of COVID there has been no appreciable increase in deaths in the USA for 2020. So how is that possible? If this is truly a pandemic and there are 300,000 deaths from COVID it is reasonable to expect there to be 300,000 more deaths over the annual average which is not the case.

You are welcome to your own opinion but not your own facts.

That is only of those patients with serious ICU recoveries.

For the vast majority of people, recovery has no such issues.

As far as I know, Covid does not increase chances of a heart attack.

Pffft! Shows how much YOU know! COVID causes EVERYTHING! Heart attacks, fatal diabetic comas, fatal impact traumas, fatal gunshot wounds, impotence, hair loss, bad breath...

COVID is also SOOOOOO contagious, that you need to wear a mask in your car, because it can travel from inside one person’s car, fly through the air, and at 70+ mph, get into YOUR car, and infect you.

Don’t you know all of this? I mean, come on, man, it’s SCIENCE!

“Young and previously healthy people with ongoing symptoms of Covid-19 are showing signs of damage to multiple organs four months after the initial infection, a study suggests.”

Almost 70% Have impairments in one or more organs.
Roughly 80% of survivors have cardiac damage.
Roughly 20% have brain damage.
Roughly 40% of survivors in my state are unable to function as they did prior to having covid. Half of these I believe are unable to work.

Sure. Its a great survival rate, but for what quality of life?

I have practiced infectious diseases medicine in hospitals for 41 years.

That’s 41 flu seasons.

I have NEVER seen anything REMOTELY like this.

LOL!

"A growing number of studies suggest many COVID-19 survivors experience some type of heart damage..."

Well that makes it official and settled...'studies suggest'!

Sorry, I don't get persuaded/convinced/alarmed by if's, maybe, might, possibly, could, alleged, or 'studies that suggest'...

You're pushing noise out into the space and behaving as a propagandist and mongering fear by using a report to justify exaggerating COVID's virulence.

Certain pathogens affect patient weaknesses in immune system and preconditions that form a comorbidity in health state that could hasten/facilitate early death. That does not mean COVID overall becomes more deadly just because it can/might effect to induce a life threatening reaction/condition by its presence when certain peoples immune systems respond. That is typical risk in anyone having been infected by pathogens. Not everybody will react to the infection or recover form it the same way. There are ALWAYS risks. COVID is no different.

It doesn’t say that. Read much? Try reading the paragraph I copied from the link.

This is why I tend to hang out on other forums with educated folk. The denial here is so thick that there is no penetrating it.

When the more contagious mutation arrives in full force some of you will be enlightened the hard way.

And this is the last time I am wasting my time and energy on freepers in denial.

Smarmy and condescending, but you’re the norm here in these discussions, as far as the “we’re all gonna die!” crowd goes.

I’ve long since given up trying to reason with the fearpers, who have repeatedly demonstrated their utter imperviousness to anything resembling it.
