Trump had refused to sign a Covid relief bill until Congress raised the amount of money paid to everyday Americans.
President Trump on Sunday night signed a $2.3 trillion federal spending and COVID relief bill, averting a government shutdown and ensuring millions of Americans continue to get unemployment benefits.
Despite his misgivings about wasteful spending and low stimulus payments in the bill, Trump said he signed the legislation because “I have an obligation to protect the people of our country“ from further economic devastation. He said, however, “more money is coming” as Congress votes this week on larger checks.
The president on Sunday also invoked the 1974 Impoundment Control Act to demand “rescissions” be made to the spending measures. Under the Act, a president can seek congressional approval to rescind funds by sending a special message to Congress identifying the amount he proposes to cut, the reasons for it, and the economic impact.
“I will sign the Omnibus and Covid package with a strong message that makes clear to Congress that wasteful items need to be removed. I will send back to Congress a redlined version, item by item, accompanied by the formal rescission request to Congress insisting that those funds be removed from the bill,” Trump said.
The signing came after Trump tweeted, “Good news on Covid Relief Bill. Information to follow!”
The signing brought hope to millions of Americans who lost jobless benefits over the weekend as a federal shutdown loomed.
The standoff occurred after Trump refused before Christmas to sign the $2.3 trillion spending and COVID relief bill, demanding more money for everyday Americans.

Only math majors or oddballs such as I understand such figures. I once asked a person the following, “If you were offered a thirty day contract which would pay you one penny for the first day and your pay would be DOUBLED each and every day for the entire thirty days would you take the offer?”
Following a VERY long pause for thought the answer was no. Then I said, “You would be turning down millions of dollars.” I got a blank look in response.

FYI Budget Update
-President Trump just invoked the Impoundment Control Act of 1974 while signing the COVID bill, allowing him to redline areas that must be addressed.
-This sends it back to Congress forcing them to 1) repeal 230, 2) cut out the wasteful spending, 3) add $2k.***
I am doubtful of this succeeding - other than a save-face move for Prez Trump. SCOTUS ruled the line item veto unconstitutional about 20 years ago. A Congressional law does not override a Constitutional principle. IOW, I question whether Trump's move forces the Congress to do anything. Hopefully it will persuade a few of them.
Nancy Pelosi and the Dems will jump at a chance to triple payments to voters but will they remove perhaps about $$$ 1/2 tril in pork to foreign countries, to Dem money laundering schemes and to bailout money to Dem states that have no revenues to run their states because they have shut everyone in their homes, shut down all business, stopped public gatherings such as church.
I hope Trump's ploy pays off; he said last year that he would not go through this ever again... BUT the Congress has pulled the same stunt: run all public payments up to the last day before the holidays and then run for home leaving POTUS holding the bag. It will be Trump's fault if the government shuts down, his fault if people do no get their unemployment checks, his fault if CoViD stimulus money does not get to people in need {especially in need because, as stated, Dem run states are not allowing anyone to earn a living - except govt workers and big Dem $ contributors.}
Time to empty the swamp. I see Fla Rep Matt Gaetz has tweeted that he will not return to the same old Republican Party. We need to see a whole lot more of that sort of commitment.
Look up the history of the old Whig Party which became incapable of acting in the face of a crisis: The War Between the States and ending slavery. The Whig Party morphed into the Republican Party which nominated a dynamic leader - Abraham Lincoln - game over. Now the Republican Party is morphing back into the Whigs, incapable of acting in the face of a crisis: the overthrow of our Constitutional Republic by a globalist hegemony.
Classic. I am 72, my wonderful grandfather asked me the same question when I was a little boy.
Is there a difference any more between the two anymore?
Yes.
How the hell does this go from 900 billion to 2.3 trillion???
My checking account shows 1200.00 posting tomorrow 600.00 ea.
