President Donald Trump declined to sign the coronavirus relief and stimulus bill on Saturday evening as he pushed for higher stimulus payments of $2000 rather than $600, meaning millions of Americans would exhaust their unemployment benefits.
Two unemployment benefits programs expired at midnight on Sunday morning, as the Wall Street Journal noted:
The first provided unemployment benefits for gig and contract workers and others who don’t generally qualify for jobless aid. The second provided up to 13 weeks of additional payments to individuals who exhausted other programs that pay benefits, such as regular state unemployment benefits. In early December, roughly 14 million people were receiving benefits through those pandemic-relief programs, representing nearly three-quarters of those currently receiving jobless benefits.
The controversial bill, nearly 6,000 pages long, would also provide temporary funding for the federal government, meaning that it would shut down at 12:01 a.m. on Tuesday if Trump does not sign the bill, or another bill funding the government.
Trump retweeted a video Saturdayof a speech he made last week criticizing wasteful spending in the bill, and demanding $2000 stimulus checks rather than $600 that had been agreed to by Congress.

True that and disappointing, however there is the context that back then he was playing the art of the deal, assuming people plaid fair and did not cheat elections.

This fact also brings up another problem with Congress holding bills to the last-minute (beside the obvious)... they're out of date!
When I worked for a state employment agency many years ago, as soon as the extra fed benefits expired, a whole bunch of people miraculously found jobs. Yes, some are in trouble, but you have to remember that what you subsidize, you will get more of and what you tax, you will get less.

The solution is really simple. Congress should send a bill with the $2000 stimulus checks in it to the President’s desk.

Yeah, looks like it won’t be a ‘unanimous Consent’ bill that could be blocked by any retiring Member (in exchange for a cushy job offer).
If it’s truly “stand alone” there’s gonna be big fun as it will allow Trump to stand strong against the pork. Hope he has

It’s a shame that thousands of needy Americans will have their relief delayed thanks to Nancy Pelosi and the other commies playing games. I’m pretty sure such Americans who need that money would not appreciate being taxed and taxed and taxed in exchange for a paltry sum received so that everyone else in the world can receive multiple times more than they do, for purely pork made up reasons.

Trump prevented the ass-raping of U.S. taxpayers by the political elite on behalf of foreign nations, left-wing think-tanks, and garbage ‘research’ outfits, ... but you wouldn’t know that by reading the headline.
What the hell does he have to lose? If congress wants the crapulus so bad make them override his veto.
