The Big Apple’s staggering surge in shootings amid the COVID-19 pandemic has led nearly 9,000 terrified New Yorkers to apply for gun permits — but the NYPD has signed off on fewer than 1,100, The Post has learned.
The 8,088 applications for first-time pistol and rifle permits submitted since March 22 - when coronavirus-related restrictions went into effect - represent a threefold-plus increase over the 2,562 submitted between March 22 and Dec. 31, 2019, NYPD statistics obtained by The Post this week show.
But only 1,087 applications were approved, far less than the 1,778 granted during the same period last year, according to the official data.
Meanwhile, the approval rate since March 22 is less than 14 percent, compared to nearly 70 percent last year.
The dramatic drop comes despite an alarming spike in shootings, which are up almost 98 percent this year, and murders, which have risen about 39 percent, according to NYPD data.

Screw NY and their gun laws. I now live in a shall issue state where open carry is legal for all.
We do not have ANTIFA problems. Those punk cowards stay the hell away from us.
Permission is called Amendment 2
The numbers are ridiculously small for the population.
From my experience, NYers know they ain't getting one and applying only puts you on the gov't/PD radar. Of course, I left Fun City almost 20 years ago and things may have changed....
This. Although we live in upstate NY I work for the local county and can hear the horrific red flag questions being asked before being “allowed” a permit. Hubs said I should get a pistol permit. No way. I’d rather keep the shotguns that his father gave him, stay off the radar and get either a taser or something from down South.
It took me about 6 months to get my pistol permit in NY. Had to fill out I think a 6 page application and pay $90 for a background check. They gave me a separate card that listed my pistol and S/N. Moved to PA, and their application was 1 page and it only cost $20. Got the permit in 2 weeks.
The gangs have all the guns they need, and, not one of them approved by NYPD.
Concealed means concealed. Carry anyway.
Then people will get them without permits.
WTH is a rifle permit?-)
What good is a permit if one also has to have a trigger lock when carrying?
I think they may have eased some restrictions but at one time it was mandatory in many NY Cities.
Sad since this is just to OWN a firearm, not be allowed to carry one.

Then arm up and carry anyway. YOu don’t need any damned Public Servant’s permission to exercise your right.
If they want to fight, we’ll give them a fight.
From what I’ve read, NYC is wildly liberal in issuing permits compared to conceal carry permits issued by San Francisco and L.A. County.
We live in Missouri. Don’t need a stinking permit to buy or carry.
In CA, there is no permit required to own a common firearm. Anybody can walk into a gun store, fill out a federal 4473 form, show your firearm safety cert, if you have or take a quick quiz, then wait 10 days and pickup the gun.
You need a permit to carry concealed, had mine over 20 years. We are may-issue, but my county is pretty good about issuance. Most counties are pretty bad.
Mostly no open carry. We got a lot of stringent whacko gun laws, but miles ahead of NY, especially NYC.
I presume it was not an NYC non-premises permit, though, right?
“...You need a permit to carry concealed, had mine over 20 years. We are may-issue, but my county is pretty good about issuance.”
I live in Missouri. I don’t have to show a state-issued ‘safety certificate’ to buy either a firearm or ammunition (if I can find it!). Like you, to buy I have to fill out the 4473, show ID, wait for NICS check and walk out of the store with my firearm, no ‘10-day cooing off’ period.
We also aren’t required to have a permit to carry concealed and we can dine at restaurants indoors! Sorry, now I’m just gloating. I left California in the early 70s. For a long time people asked me why I left such a wonder place. It’s been a while since anyone has asked me that.
