Common coronaviruses appear to be highly seasonal (the 'surge' isn't coming from people not masking up etc.)

A recent study by the University of Michigan School of Public Health in Ann Arbor tracked a group of participants over 8 years. The team looked in detail at the prevalence of the four most common human coronaviruses in the population.

The research, which now appears in The Journal of Infectious Diseases, shines a light on an understudied aspect of coronaviruses and may prove valuable for scientists trying to make sense of the current pandemic.

...

To do so, the team drew on data from a longitudinal study of households receiving primary care from the University of Michigan Health Care System.

This original study, called the Household Influenza Vaccine Evaluation (HIVE), is investigating respiratory illnesses in households with children. It has been running since 2010.

In the 8 years that the present study focused on, HIVE participant numbers varied from 895–1,441. Participants in the study tended to be younger than the general population, primarily because the study stipulated that households needed to contain children to participate.

Participants would regularly report any symptoms of respiratory illness. Researchers carried out follow-up interviews to gather additional information and take swabs to determine the precise illness present.

...

A key finding of the study was that common human coronaviruses seem to be highly seasonal.

When the study started surveilling participants all year round, the researchers found that only 2.5% of human coronavirus respiratory infections occurred in the months between June and September.

Furthermore, the four human coronaviruses the team studied were also highly similar in the pattern of when they occurred: increasing in December, peaking in either January or February, then reducing in March.

Here is the key bar chart:

Counts of human coronavirus (HCoV) infections over 8 study years by type and month of illness onset: Household Influenza Vaccine Evaluation Study 2010–2018.

As I wrote elsewhere, this 'surge' isn't due to people not following govmint orders, celebrating with family, blah blah blah. It's due to the autumnal equinox.

Viruses gonna virus.

or why they used pangolin and caucasian placenta
in the spike protein?

or HOW MUCH royalties CDC and FauXi get per test?

and per vaccine?

THIS DISEASE IS AN IQ TEST
.... and a means to MURDER (as planned).

They should put a new name to it. How about, “Cold and Flu Season?”

FWIW, it appears the winter solstice plays a larger part. I assume these are northern hemisphere numbers? Does the southern hemisphere show correlating shifts?

Because none of those things matter at this point.

Thanks DoodleBob... in Washington State we are currently still in lockdown with restaurants, gyms and numerous other businesses still closed. Thanks to an unbelievable amount of government funded advertising sheeple wear their dust masks when they are outside for a walk, riding their bicycles, driving their cars and even hanging around their own houses. It is absolutely insane.

A friend of ours who was wearing a mask nearly 24/7 almost died from a bad case of pneumonia. One of the first things the doctor did was to take away her masks... This made her frantic, she had developed a psycological problem where she felt dependent on them. Who would have thought that people could be conditioned to believe that wearing a scarf or dust mask would keep them from getting a varient of the common cold?

Re: Solstice vs Autumnal Equinox.

Fair point. I posted this elsewhere but here is another graph, except this has DECADES of data showing the SEASONAL RISE in cases and fatalities, and not a "surge.

The majority of deaths in most countries can be attributed to causes that feature a distinct seasonal pattern. The figure depicts the relative monthly frequencies of nine selected causes of death in the United States for women and men combined for the years 1959–2014. The reported number of counts in parentheses in the title of each panel is the actual number of deaths.

The study I'm referencing here was across all states, while the article in this thread was focused on Michigan. That may play a role in the differentials.

Well. Duh. It’s a winter virus. It will be with us forever just like the common cold which is a corona virus

conditioned

This is a VERY important point, thank you.

I see too many people who walk around (or DRIVE around...that's an accident waiting to happen) outside of a store etc with a mask when they don't need to do so. Sometimes I get an odd look when I do so, and if someone complains I'm prepared to simply say "Thanks, Karen" and keep walking.

It's ironic, how the left screeched "resist" for four years. If they seat Biden and we do half of the 'resistance' they did, they and their conditioned little heads will explode.

That’s actually fascinating. It’s almost like warm weather can be attributed to wellness. Meanwhile the global warming cult is proclaiming how we’re all going to die because of rising temperatures. It’s almost like everything is cyclical.

"the common cold which is a corona virus"

The "common cold" is caused by over 200 different viruses. 4 of them are in the coronavirus family. Most colds are caused by one of the viruses in the rhinovirus family. This is also the reason there's no vaccine for the "common cold". Such a vaccine would have to cover over 200 different viruses and probably cost you something like $20,000 a year. Nobody's paying $20,000/yr to not get a cold, so there's no market, so there's no vaccine. There's no technical reason we couldn't make a vaccine; it's just not financially viable.

My guess is that a study from Down Under would have the reverse pattern.

The study posits that the seasonality arises from people being inside more frequently, not getting enough sunlight, and other things related to cold months.

Alone, driving a car, alone walking on a rural road, alone on a kayak in the middle of a lake, alone, bicycling down a country bike path, all places I have seen people wearing masks.

That is what happens when the news media, the government, and the medical community, all lie.

Either we've never been healthier or they are calling the flu Covid 19 for big government bucks. What a HOAX. Just as crooked as the election was.

Appears to be the exact inverse of the Monthly Average UV Indices ...

i.e., More UV, less flu

I saw that chart recently in a study. The vehicle deaths, suicides, and lung cancer are almost independent of season. I would have guessed suicides would have had seasonality peaking in the depths of winter after the solstice. That is curious.

The lung diseases (except cancer) follow seasonality as expected. I was surprised to see the seasonality of heart diseases. Maybe because people are more sedentary in winter months?

UV and probably low relative humidity in heated spaces drying out nasal mucous membranes and increasing susceptibility to viral entry.
