Battery Wars: is Japan about to beat China in race for the energy game changer of the decade?
Japan once supplied the world with the most advanced Li-Ion batteries. China and Korea now dominate the market, and Japan wants it back
The search for the holy grail of batteries may be over. After a multi-year industry-wide effort, Japan solves the elusive solid-state technology

Quoting from later on in the article:
“If Toyoda is ever to see a car levitate from one of his factories, Toyota’s strategic investment in battery development and the funding of airborne car start-ups will need to pay off. The first part of that, the battery investment, is about to be realised as Toyota Motor is poised to reveal a monumental transition in energy storage for personal mobility by being the first company sell a car to powered by solid-state batteries with a prototype to be unveiled in 2021.”
Its a game changer. 500 km range with a 10 minute recharge time, puts it into drect cmpetition with gas powered vehicles.
I still will choose a Chevy V8 product over anything else for driving the vast distances across America.
Money line From rgread article:
“USING THE FORCE
Now that solid-state batteries allow for a 500km trip on a single charge, can recharge in 10 minutes, and have none of the safety concerns that plagued BYD and Tesla in their early years, the global development and adoption of EVs is likely to accelerate as rapidly as Tesla’s curvy new roadster.”
For me I’ll stick with my gasoline powered SUV for the foreseeable future, I can see the allure of EVs but right now it’s not for me...
But what i would be up for is the application in solar or independent power production.
I have a desire to build from the ground up a totally off grid home using alternative energy without giving up modern conveniences....
It’s possible but expensive to do that now.
I would like to have a rural isolate piece of land where you need a water well, septic tank because public utilities don’t exist...
So why not produce your own power and sell the excess back to the power company.
If you could dramatically increase the storage capacity of battery banks that can be recharged in a fraction of the time, it would be a total game changer off grid living.
Um....Ford!
I wonder how this will affect the solar power station world. I just bought an Inergy Solar Power Station that uses a Lithium NMC battery for storage.
Bullshit article. Not one word about the actual technology involved.
Um....Ford!>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
I have driven them all. I’ll take a Chevy V8 product.
Fords are good PU trucks too, bu they just do not fit me as well.
Its a game changer. 500 km range with a 10 minute recharge time, puts it into direct competition with gas powered vehicles.

While going up a 6% grade in a blizzard at minus 20 and the heater going full blast?
Good summary of current SOTA (state-of-the-art) battery tech.
Very interesting article thanks.

I hadn’t even heard of most of those.
While going up a 6% grade in a blizzard at minus 20 and the heater going full blast?>>>>>>>>>>>
Exactly. Give me V8 or Give me death.
We will not have equivalent power and heat until we have
portable fusion generators.
And that V8 rumble? its unmatched. Its the sound of America.
Beating China is moot since they will steal any technology breakthrough.
I think we all know electric vehicles are really not viable for many but they will have a place in certain conditions. They’re not going to be hauling loads, rolling up and down the mountain roads or running around this old rough West Texas ranch. They’ll pretty much be a flat land no load vehicle for now. I don’t see myself hitching up to the horse trailer and heading to New Mexico for an elk hunt with one. You ain’t going to see one with a loaded stock trailer headed to the sale. The good side is it’s going to take allot of natural gas to keep those electric turbines running to power these vehicles and tons of fuel to mine the minerals needed.
I worry less about China stealing technology than our people giving or selling it to them without regard for the cost to the country. They can’t easily steal it unless we allow them access to sensitive areas, look the other way when they are caught stealing, or trade our technology for access to their markets. We left the door open, it’s no wonder they walked right in a took things. In some cases, people here helped them carry it out.
On top of that, China will lie, cheat, steal, or simply take by force supplies of rare earth minerals or whatever other natural resources they need in order to dominate the field.
Which Chevy LS against Ford Mod (Coyote), and why?
Let the games begin!
Maserati has the best exhaust sound, IMHO.
The engineer that dialed that in for them probably sold 10% of those cars.
