When we come across false information on social media, it is only natural to feel the need to call it out or argue with it. But my research suggests this might do more harm than good. It might seem counterintuitive, but the best way to react to fake news—and reduce its impact—may be to do nothing at all.
False information on social media is a big problem. A UK parliament committee said online misinformation was a threat to "the very fabric of our democracy". It can exploit and exacerbate divisions in society. There are many examples of it leading to social unrest and inciting violence, for example in Myanmar and the United States.
It has often been used to try to influence political processes. One recent report found evidence of organized social media manipulation campaigns in 48 different countries. The UK is one of those countries, as demonstrated by news reports about a local branch of the Conservatives which urged activists to campaign by "weaponising fake news".
The advice appears to be shut the eff up and take it!
And when was this magic time where everyone only had accurate information to decide how to vote? And nobody was lead astray by an incorrect story?
What this is really about is that they want the ability to suppress stories they don’t want told, mostly including their wrongdoing and arguments that we should alter our course.
Science is now policized. Has been for some time.
Memory Hole comes to mind from 1984.
I think the best approach is to quit watching fake news organizations and watch better outlets like OANN, NewsmaxTV, NTD News. Thus depriving fake news of revenue.
But we should still debunk fake news, just not in a way that causes people to watch those organizations.
Sometimes attributed to Mark Twain: “The man who doesn’t read the newspaper is uninformed. The man who does read the newspaper is misinformed.”
Are great and wonderful president Donald J Trump coined the term “fake news”
The problem for the leftist is they’re trying to call the truth “fake news”
They constantly claim that we deplorable’s are living in our “other world”
Unfortunately for these idiots this is what courts at least used to be for
But now with their incredible use of intimidation and rioting ; they have scared judges into not doing their job
Look don’t get me wrong we have the Clinton body count don’t we?
And call Jeffrey Epstein he didn’t kill himself did he?
Nor did James McDougall Vince Foster Ron brown. Et al
Fortunately Black Lives Matter ( burn loot murder ) has been really exposed now ; and has lost almost all support , where they were at about 60 to 70% in May
But remember these leftist Houligan’s go to peoples personal house like Tucker Carlson and harass them and drive them into hiding
They don’t have to kill you to intimidate you ; but they do have to kill a few people
I don’t really think the leftist idiots , who play with violence like this , really understand true violence Like WAR.
or DO THEY UNDERSTAND just how well armed the American citizen IS
INDEED we are
and how little our PATIENCE REMAINS FOR their nonsense
Blatantly stealing this election , was really the final straw
They are very very lucky !!
these leftist communist insurgents !
that Trump isn’t a mean vindictive and violent guy.
Like all dictators are
None of us nobody on this planet !!!
could take what this great man !!! and his family !!! have taken for us
DEPLORABLES
Let us stop here and think logically (something the article seems to have missed). Sometimes when we come across false information, we may not realize it is false. And sometimes when we come across true information, we may be under the mistaken impression that it is false.
We have to admit to ourselves we may not already know everything.
The most charitable outlook I can take to the author was that he was thinking only of those cases where the "false information" was all three of the following:
1) Very unlikely to be true.
2) Likely to be mistaken by those more gullible than we are.
3) Important for people not to be mistaken about.
In such cases, I think it very important to research and verify rather than ignore these cases. First of all, to make sure we ourselves are not wrong. Second presenting the evidence to others...who even if we do not convince we at least sharpen our own critical thinking and rhetorical skills.
We should examine and dig and get to the truth--this habit perhaps even being more important than one's view of the particular proposition in question.
The author's attitude seems to be something that is opposed to critical thinking and seeking after the truth, and instead aligned with protecting narratives.
