China is suffering mass power cuts in the south, prompting cities to dim street lights, suspend factory production and tell office blocks to turn off heating unless the temperature falls below 3C.
The electricity crisis appears to have been prompted by a shortage of coal after Beijing banned imports from Australia. China imposed trade bans against Australia after Canberra demanded an inquiry into the origins of coronavirus and criticised Beijing’s treatment of the people of Hong Kong.

Second, having visited China just a couple years ago, I can tell you that they have a middle class that like to drive new single occupancy cars, wear stylish western clothes, and have the latest electronics and cell phones. There is real rural poverty and even urban poverty. China has a tiger on their hands, they have a population that is use to massive growth in the economy and their way of life and if that growth curve ever stops, they will have an angry population that has been taught that revolution is a good and glorious thing.
When I was there there were police and soldiers everywhere along with surveillance cameras covering even alleys and pedestrian only areas. Big Brother make sure I could not use anything Google (no Google translate, no Google search, no Google maps, no G-mail, etc.)
The CCP is holding onto power by harsh dictatorial rule and the people seem to put up with it only because their standard of living is improving so much. Once that goes, then it could be civil unrest.
Good question since Indonesia has lots of coal if I recall correctly from Clinton’s Riady deal days.
