AP Analysis: For Republicans, profanity is suddenly scandalous
The Associated Press ^ | December 19, 2020 | By STEVEN SLOAN (D-AP)

WASHINGTON - The definition of a scandal changes quickly in Washington.

Over the course of four years, the nation’s capital has careened from crisis to crisis. There was the travel ban, the investigation into Russian interference in an election, the firing of an FBI director, a 35-day government shutdown, dismissals of Cabinet secretaries via tweet, impeachment and a historic pandemic that forced the president to be hospitalized.

And then there was the Glamour interview.

Jen O’Malley Dillon, President-elect Joe Biden’s campaign manager and incoming deputy chief of staff, referred to congressional Republicans as “f——ers” in a conversation with the magazine. And Washington was again in a tizzy.

The hand-wringing is a preview of one of the political shifts ahead once Biden takes office. Democrats preparing to take power are furious at any sign of a double standard from Republicans who looked past — or encouraged — President Donald Trump’s profane and divisive behavior in office.

And Republicans, eager to portray Democrats as elitists, are suddenly aghast over a lack of decorum.

Although Marco Rubio didn’t condemn Trump’s comment about African “shithole countries,” the Florida Republican senator seemed scandalized by O’Malley Dillon’s comment. He tweeted that it shows what Democrats “really think.” White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany tweeted the comment “says volumes” about Biden.

They hated us first.

We can debate who hated who first, but the fact is that Democrats would rather stick needles in their eyes than work with Republicans and Republicans feel the same. It's been that way for several administrations and neither side is interested in changing it.

Your everybody does it is completely flawed analysis.

The subject of this thread is candidate who call for unity and then do nothing to achieve it. You can put that in the 'everybody does it' category.

It was never a campaign promise - besides there’s a far cry from -

“ For those who have chosen not to support me in the past, of which there were a few people, I’m reaching out to you for your guidance and your help so we can work together and unify our great country”

To “they’re fuckers”

Trump appeals to unity through common appeal of Americanism.

That is different than the two parties.

Both parties loathe Americans.

Trumps unity appeals have worked as indicated by the 12 million increase in voting for him to have a second term.

Obama declined by about 8 million because Americans realized he hated them.
