Mar-a-Lago neighbors say Trump can’t live there after White House
The Guardian ^ | 17/12/20 | Laura Aratani

Neighbors of Donald Trump’s infamous Mar-a-Lago golf club in Palm Beach, Florida are warning the president that he cannot live at the club after he leaves the White House, following an agreement he made with the town in 1993.

In a letter to the town of Palm Beach and the US Secret Service sent this week, a lawyer representing a family that lives next to Mar-a-Lago reiterated that “Mar-a-Lago is a social club, and no one may reside on the property.”

“To avoid an embarrassing situation for everyone and to give the president time to make other living arrangements in the area, we trust you will work with his team to remind them of the use agreement parameters,” wrote Reginald Stambaugh, the lawyer.

Multiple reports indicate that Trump has already made arrangements to move to the Sunshine State: Trump’s apartment at the club is being renovated and Melania Trump is looking at Florida schools for 14-year-old Barron Trump. And while Trump was largely associated with New York City before his move to Washington, Trump shifted his domicile from New York to Florida in 2019 and voted for himself as a Florida resident this year.

....Trump signed an agreement in 1993 with the local government of Palm Beach that would allow him to turn the private residence into a business so long as he followed a set of rules, including a limitation on how many days of the year Trump can live at Mar-a-Lago.

“...neighbors have indicated the town let him get away with breaking rules within the agreement over the last four years because of his role as president. “

Aha, there you go. If he occupied the property in violation of the contract over four years, and there was zero attempt at enforcement, this could be deemed an implicit waiver. At least there’s a colorable argument for that.

He’ll move in next door to Rush. Maybe he should re-dedicate Mara Lago as a homeless shelter, out of deference for his woke neighbors. F@#$ them. But first another Trump Flotilla for a send-off.

Would one of the neighbors be that bizarre woman who claimed he molested her on the airplane but was witnessed to be the one harassing him?

Trump is not a “guest”. He is the owner.

He may be the owner, but there is a clause in the contract and it is a place of business. IF he lives there post Presidency the club is no longer a place of business, no longer a social club, no longer tax revenue generation, etc.

In order to live there he needs to rezone the property back to residential. He likely wasn’t even planning on needing to live in Mar-a-Lago in the coming few years due to re-election.

My bigger concern with him living in an existing known residence doesn’t come from neighbors, but the looney lefties. And if Trump were to be my new neighbor on one hand I’d be thrilled, on the other I would not be looking forward to the level of security needed by his family all because of Trump Derangement Syndrome of the left.

Trump isn’t going to be able to live anywhere in the country without significant harassment or security. He will be essentially a President in Exile. And this breaks my heart for him and all his family.

It is possible the agreement has a sunset clause, or was subsequently changed, or that the memory is faulty, perhaps only a verbal assurance, never intended to be a permanent restriction, and not legally binding.

With regard to multi-use, it’s not just Trump any longer. Many properties have condos, hotel rooms, club facilities, and retail and service establishments. I don’t know how this particular property is zoned, or what variances have been allowed. Donald Trump has a bit of expertise in these matters.

And, Trump has been dealing with neighbors all over the planet, for decades. It isn’t unusual for a municipality to welcome a business, thinking of jobs and tax base, and some people to object because of traffic and such. And, some of the objections are legitimate, and should be addressed.

Notice that Trump is and has been making arrangements for a departure from Washington, for which he is attacked, and at the same time he is accused of not voluntarily leaving. Welcome to the world of Trump.

Good point. I'm sure Texas would love to have DJT. And "trespassers will be shot". Got that ANTIFA?

They’ve not had a problem with it for years now. My unqualified guess is, they’d lose in court because of that. But I doubt Trump wants to live there permanently.

Would him living there mean it is no longer a place of business? Why can't golf continue as a money making business? Why can't he then become a permanent paying "guest"?

The SS can also become paying "guests".

When you’re Trump, You can live where you want.

I remember seeing a few years back, that he was selling his Caribbean home.

I imagine he has numerous homes throughout the world.

I imagine all his golf clubs have apartments for him.
They may all have stipulations for days lived there.
So, you just live a one place the limit and move to the next.

I spoke first on another thread. He should come to Israel and ditch his SS detail for some reliable bodyguards. They’re swamp, too.

Here’s an interesting description from CNN.

“It will feel like staying full-time at a nice hotel,” said Laurence Leamer, author of “Mar-a-Lago: Inside the Gates of Power at Donald Trump’s Presidential Palace.” “It’s fine for a bit, sure, but can you imagine Donald Trump just sitting around there for six months of the year? It will start to feel confining very quickly.”
Not to mention the steady stream of club members who will essentially walk past the former President’s front door every time they wander from the pool to the dining room, or the spa to the patio.
“It will be the weirdest thing,” said Leamer, who suggests if Trump is as wealthy has he claims to be, he should close the club and keep the entire mansion as his home.
A source with knowledge of preparations for Trump’s arrival in January said there is currently “a really extensive Secret Service presence now,” at Mar-a-Lago, as security elements are being assessed for Trump’s long-term protection.
Melania Trump views Mar-a-Lago as a peaceful respite of sun, solitude and self-care.
“Her parents have a suite of rooms there as well, not far from the family quarters,” said Leamer, who has spent ample time at Mar-a-Lago as a guest of several members. Viktor and Amalija Knavs, Trump’s parents, stay at Mar-a-Lago often, and have done so for much of the two decades their daughter has been with Donald Trump.
