MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador on Thursday defended Mexico’s restrictive immigration policy, which has prevented many Central American migrants from crossing Mexico to reach the U.S. border.

Mexico has sent National Guard officers and immigration agents to the southern border with Guatemala to prevent migrant caravans from entering Mexico and detain those who do manage to cross....

...López Obrador’s willingness to assume ownership of the immigration policies despite evidence of U.S. pressure reflects his nationalist stance on most issues; he has made defending Mexico’s sovereignty a central issue...

and he called out the absurd lockdowns for what they are.

And he held off on congratulating biden.

That doesn’t make him a good guy.

But those are 3 good decisions.

And in 10..9..8...someone will be along to tell us all what monster he is.

“he’s a socialist!!”

Unlike Western Europe?

He’s also a nationalist. Unlike western Europe.

Maybe he came to see the wealth Mexico could see with a real president of the most powerful country in the world right next door.

You have to have a voter ID to vote, to.

With a photo on it.

And it is only for voting.

Is that racist?

Amlo came in threatening to override the border and flood the US with “refugee” columns from Central America. I suspect however that these turned out to be very unpopular with his base. Mexicans are extremely patriotic or even xenophobic.

Also the Mexican public hates lockdowns with a passion, and the common people more so than the middle class. They mostly would rather absorb the casualties, as they have been doing, the Mexican Covid death rate is very high.

In some ways the Mexican establishment, corrupt as it is, is far more responsive to popular opinion than that of the US. And its mass media is likewise more honest, overall, with much less talking down or gaslighting, in spite of being more overtly leftist.

Its a pity that there is a language barrier. The contrast between Canadian, US and Mexican public discourse is very interesting.

You know, if it weren’t for the cartels and government corruption, Mexico would completely destroy us economically. Year-round excellent climate, tourism, hard-working people...This country should be among the top ten in the world.
