Mail and parcel delivery during the holiday season is taxing U.S. carriers, according to data. An estimated six million packages are being left stranded daily as they await pickup, according to ShipMatrix, a software company that helps retailers and others track shipments. Another 2.5 million packages are being picked up but not being delivered on time.
CBS News.com reported FedEx, UPS, Amazon, U.S. Postal Service, and other shippers are all being slammed by the demand, heightened by on-line consumer activity during the COVID-19 pandemic.
"Our entire industry is underwater because of the demand," said Satish Jindel, president of ShipMatrix, who added Friday likely will be the deadline for consumers to expect items to arrive by Christmas.
Some experts already have warned that packages not mailed yet will not reach their destination by Christmas using standard shipping.
The situation could slow the U.S. economy recovery from the pandemic.
Another industry source told CBS MoneyWatch the number of packages not being picked up daily is far exceeding those in past years.
FedEx and UPS declined to disclose how many packages were being delayed in transit, according to the report. A UPS spokesperson said 96% of shipments had arrived on time — but that figure does not include packages not picked up.
"This is one of the most successful peak holiday shipping seasons ever as we focus on maintaining a reliable delivery network that all of our customers can depend on," a UPS spokesman told CBS MoneyWatch in an emailed statement.
A FedEx spokesperson warned against believing the ShipMatrix data.
"Data provided by third-party consultants can vary widely based on the specific markets, customers and shipping lanes they choose for their analyses," the spokesperson said.

Some people would use the phrase "economic recovery". But I guess journalists don't need to write well. They just need to push a narrative.
This is all about continuing the narrative. They’d spin a forty car pile up on the interstate into an issue about COVID. I pray that the MSM falls victim to its own hubris, and soon.
“This is one of the most successful peak holiday shipping seasons ever“
How will Biden spin the tale of an economic collapse? He has to have DJT to blame his failures on.
When the “Progressives” are through we’ll look back on 2020 as the good old days that at least had some hope.
Maybe the USPS should have spent more time preparing for Christmas than burying election ballots.
Had a package shipped end of Nov, via the US Postal Service (not my first choice - just what the shipper offered unless I paid a big upcharge).
It was supposed to arrive 12/5. It STILL hasn’t arrived, and USPS has absolutely no idea where it is.
I turned on package tracking and the last update is on 12/9.
Called the Post Office and the rep spent more time complaining how bad it was that she had to work and how ‘hard’ it was because “government employees can’t get unemployment” (I don’t think that’s true, but what she was upset about) than talking about my package.
Yet, Dems want the .gov to run our healthcare while the Post Office can’t even get packages delivered even remotely on time - or tell you where they are when they’re not.
That should scare the blue blazes out of everyone.
It’s so bad! As my brother said, “It’s a good thing the USPS wasn’t involved in the election!” ;)
Last week I was going to send a small quilt to my friend in CA. The P.O. said it would cost $43, and it might take a MONTH to get there. I’m sure Pony Express would’ve been faster. I didn’t send it then.
USPS has been behind for months and there is no evidence they are even trying.
FedX is somewhat better and I do not regularly use UPS so I can’t say.
Ask any questions and get a shrug and they blame the pandemic.
Just another excuse to not do your freakin job. Not just them but pretty much everyone.
Our mail carrier skipped our house at least once per week. Sometimes we don’t get our mail until 6 at night.
“Our mail carrier skipped our house at least once per week. Sometimes we don’t get our mail until 6 at night.”
Lucky you. My mail sometimes comes after 7 (as late as 8), and I give up looking for it until I get up at 6 AM the next morning.
But the postman makes up for it by delivering other people’s mail to me, too. So I get to act as a volunteer postman, too...
Maybe we can still open gifts that arrive late, even into the weeks after the election, oops, I mean birth of the Savior. Yes, of course we can. I think I’ll extend my Christmas to 18 days this year.
I’m never going to get MyPillows!
Those aren’t pillows.
Nobody saw this coming, I’m sure.
This is 🐎 💩. I usually work 12-14 hours day with a helper this time of year. This year I am getting 8-9 with no helper.
I am concerned too many people have been destroyed to field a normal Christmas.
USPS has been awful for months. Our neighborhood social media constantly contains posts of stuff going to the wrong house and many just not moving after pickup. I think the post offices are too busy filling out fake ballots to stuff boxes in Georgia.
Boycott the Post Office. They are responsible for the antipresident.
I would love it if the mail carrier would skip delivering the junk mail and catalogs.
Those are guaranteed to show up. Anything of value tends to lag.
Same here. We routinely get someone else’s mail. Mail is skipped most Saturdays, and mail is often not showing up until late. We are having problems in our local post office getting carriers since they only pay about $20/hr.
I ordered a couple of shirts from LL Bean yesterday and they will not arrive til Jan 22, 2021. One shirt is one I bought 3 weeks before and wanted another with the pattern. It arrive after 2 weeks.
