Trump has 232 uncontested electoral votes, and 56 competing electoral votes. So in a best case scenario, he would have 288 electoral votes, even without Michigan and Wisconsin.
288 = victory. OK? Congress will have to decide which electoral votes to accept.
Short answer is that helps the election be contested on Jan 6th.
Found this summary link helpful in following procedure. To summarize further: Mike Pence, as President of the Senate will count the electoral votes received by him and the archivist. If there were more than one set of electors sent in, he needs to sort out which he will count. After he counts and announces the winner before both legislative houses if there is at least one member of each of the houses who objects to the count it is a contested election and they have to sort out which electors get counted in congress. If there is no 270 majority that is reached by any candidate then the electoral college becomes moot and a procedure of one vote per state through the house of representatives is used with the Republicans having a huge advantage.
These electors give Republican objectors or Mike Pence delegates to count for Trump so that they can contest the election. Without them, it would be much harder to disagree with the count.
