It's been obvious for some time that there is something weird about the way Canada approaches its relationship with China — a disconnect brought into sharp relief this week by the news that Global Affairs and the Department of National Defence were not on the same page when it came to military ties and training involving the People's Liberation Army
In some respects, the volcanic online political eruption which followed stories in The Globe and Mail and other media outlets, based on exclusive access to information documents, was predictable, as was the flurry of finger-pointing in the House of Commons on Thursday and Friday.
Diplomats were alarmed when Gen. Jonathan Vance, the country's senior military commander, cancelled winter military exercises with the PLA in 2019, fretting that it might aggravate Beijing or make the lives of Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor even worse.

Prime Minister Mini-Me. A useful idiot.
Someday there will be a wall along the northern border too.

Chinese oligarchs, banks, and conglomerates essentially own British Columbia. They are also making inroads to controlling Alberta’s energy resources and they are looking to have the major presence on the NW Passage as the year round ice disappears, just like they control the Canal and will control the shipping lanes from the Timor Sea, Makassar Strait, and Cape of Good Hope. They have something Stalin and Khrushchev never had, a forign policy backed by real money. The Rusdians thought in terms of military power and ideology. The Chicoms combine a budding military with enormous or the appearance of enormous wealth. As the ads for Denison’s Clothier said 60 years ago on 77WABC , Money talks. Nobody walks.
Canada has been welcoming foreign esp. Chinese investment. So many Chinese were buying up condos in Vancouver that it priced locals out of the housing market. Up to 2 years ago or so, they tolerated it because it funded the construction industry and local government via permits.
Not reported.
Chalk River nuclear research labs are very close to the army base
But a wall on the border won't be going up to keep Canadians from fleeing to the US. My daughter moved back to Canada from the US this fall. I have step children in the US and I am making provision for them. Fairly sure I can use the Native rat line down the road to get them over the river if things get dicey.
I think the refugee flow will be south to north.
