Relocation of 700 troops from Somalia reverses administration course; move follows troop cuts in Iraq, Afghanistan
President Trump ordered the Pentagon to pull nearly all U.S. troops out of Somalia, where for 13 years they have been fighting a low-intensity battle against the local al Qaeda affiliate, al-Shabaab, U.S. officials said.
The roughly 700 troops stationed in Somalia would move to bases in Kenya and Djibouti and enter Somalia to conduct shorter counterterrorism missions against al-Shabaab, as well as a smaller force of Islamic State militants. The American troops are expected to leave the country by early next year, the officials said.
The move, supported by the new acting defense secretary, Chris Miller, effectively reverses the course set by his predecessor, Mark Esper. Mr. Esper favored drawing down U.S. forces operating in the volatile Sahel region of West Africa while maintaining the American presence in Somalia, according to a senior U.S. official.
The Pentagon, in a statement sent to lawmakers Friday, said that despite the withdrawal, U.S. aims in Somalia hadn’t changed.

Somalia has the population density of Colorado and the climate of southern California. They should be taking refugees, not exporting them.

Neither group has any business being where they are now.
Why leave _any_ troops there? Are they being used as some kind of local police squad? What is their function?

If we are not in Somalia, the Chinese will be in charge of Khat production worldwide, and we will lose our source of immigrants to Minnesota and Congress.
Most of them, yes, but not all. In California, I knew a nurse from that part of Africa. She was a naturalized US citizen, and was a US Air Force reserve Captain, and a flight nurse, on Air Force ambulance aircraft. I admired her. She didn’t believe anything that Ilhan Omar believes. But Omar? I would gladly buy her a one way ticket, back to that crap hole country.
As long as their loyalty is not to islam first, then I could cut them some slack.
Minnesota, where I spent most of my time, while growing up, wasn’t always a Somali crap hole, like it is now. 😁 The 148th Fighter Wing (flying F-16s) is at Duluth. 👍 Right now, however, unless things change, and I doubt they will, Minnesota is a lost cause. 👎
I knew another air traffic controller, at Travis AFB, CA. He was from Minnesota, and moved back there, and is a supervisor in the control tower, at Minneapolis International airport. He says Minneapolis is a crap hole city. He also worked at San Jose, CA tower, but doesn’t want to go back to California. 😩
Can they transfer the US troops from “real Somalia” to the “little Somalia” parts of Minneapolis while they’re at it, LOL?
To make this fair, every American soldier removed from Somalia should be replaced with 150 of the Somalian vermin in MN...
