It is past time to bring the discussion Americans are now having in private into public light. The longer it stays underground and forbidden, the more we risk serious and sudden shocks to our political and cultural life together. Only by having this debate out in public can we hope to resolve the current crisis. When we can’t agree as a people on the purpose of government, or even about what human nature is, the next logical question is: how can we stay together as citizens? What truths, in other words, do we still think self-evident? What is the basis of our shared citizenship? Where is the growing divide in America leading us, and what is the best path forward?

If we have to start playing Cowboys and Commies, so be it.
The Union, in the words of Lincoln, “will become all one thing, or all the other.”
There is no way to unify with the party of baby killers and God deniers.
The leftist nuts have always been around, but nobody took them seriously. They are mostly just kids still learning how the world works. Now the MSM takes them seriously if only, for no other reasons, because it’s good television.
But in the end that is not good.
Talk is futile. The ballot box is gone along with the soap and jury box.
The only real way out would be to reinvigorate federalism, and have it permeate down even within states. Much more local control/responsibility, etc.. Let the Dems set policy in the areas they control, and leave us along.
But there are two problems with that. The first is that it is in the nature of the left not to want to let others alone. They have to tell us what to do because only they know what is best for us.
The other issue is that only the federal government currently has the power to coin money, and therefore to run the permanent debts necessary to support the welfare state. That's the real reason Dems abhor the idea of turning over entitlement programs to the states -- because they'd be forced to balance their budgets.
For the moment we still have the ammo box.
Under Biden it will be like living in the reconstruction south without ever having waged a civil war.
Saint Kyle the Ventilator, Patron Saint of Lead Projectiles, pray for us.
Exactly. These are two reasons why we are where we are.
The only way to solve the problem at this point is for truckers to stop delivering to cities for a couple weeks. We should tell FelchiFa that the ports and railways are being used to deliver spooks to Portland
Maybe we could goad Red China into nuking Philadelphia, Detroit, Milwaukee and Atlanta.
Maybe toss in Portland and Seattle as well.
LOL!!!
I think most folks are trying to cover all their bases while dealing with a tech industry and, increasingly, social science that is trying to pigeonhole them into some misbegotten category or another for the convenience of their “betters.”
The election is over and there is, predictably, a huge fall-off in people’s attention, which yields the floor to the most zealous and likely most extreme. So you have the continuing saga of grown men and women refusing to wear face masks and socially distance, and you have the progressives continuing that the only reason the Democrats lost is because there weren’t enough insane proggy policies and “social justice” initiatives. Nancy Pelosi is continuing to treat the rest of the country like they are people trying to sell gold to her own personal pawn shop, Joe is nominating a crazy person to economic policy positions, and I honestly don’t know what Chuck Schumer is smoking.
Sometimes the other side doesn’t give you a choice.
And yes, I am seeking opportunities elsewhere.
Kamala Harris had a rally in Las Vegas where nobody, NOBODY, showed up.
Biden was lucky to get a couple dozen people to show up at his few rallies.
Does anyone think that the Democrats would come charging out, gun in hand, to fight a civil war?
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!
They are trying to use the system that’s in place to steal.
They aren’t fighters.
They’re spenders.
