Sadly, I think we are awake (as opposed to being ‘woke’).
I’m as guilty as most in focusing too tightly on the minutiae when the root cause is almost overwhelming to continually ponder.

Rodney Applewhite, 25, was traveling to Arizona to visit his mother for Thanksgiving when police tried to pull him over after allegedly seeing him weave in and out of oncoming traffic lanes, according to the Niles Daily Star.
Police ended their pursuit due to dangerous conditions and Applewhite was spotted a short time later standing in traffic.
Investigators say he began to fight with police and grabbed an officer’s gun.

I guess that makes him armed at that point stealing a gun. And after a pursuit he evaded for a while, creating a dangerous situation in traffic so the cops had to shut it down, I would say that the cops were placed in peril when he armed himself.
Don’t believe what the media says without question. They haven’t told the whole story in over 50 years. Only what they need.

Why did “an altercation” occur?
Slo Joe is trying to figure out how an unarmed man could hold the steering wheel to drive. ;-)
This is not news reporting. It’s pure bias. Starts with the headline. Then it tells us he was innocently going to see his mother for Thanksgiving. It attempts to hide the real reason with the innocuous words “when an altercation occured”.
You have to follow a link to find out what really happened. “Applewhite resisted arrest and grabbed one officer’s gun”.
After revealing the truth, the article covers it up right away with “Excessive use of force is a serious problem” and “There have been 114 fatal police shootings”.
The media want violence in the streets. They want the police reduced to impotent wimps.
Are all the details out on this incident yet?

“...considered a person unarmed if they attacked the cop with a knife...”. I beleive it was china joe that said that and wondered why the cops don’t just shoot them in the leg instead of the heart.

Why no riots?
Simple. Biden and his team plan on BEING the police. The police will and always have followed orders.
Police are not your friend in Democrat controlled districts and States (St, Louis, Portland, Philadelphia, Maryland etc.) Police will not be your friend if Biden takes over and essentially federalizes local police. Only a few rural sheriffs will put fidelity of the constitution over orders they may get from despotic state and federal government.
To the police that plan on following orders rather than the constitution, remember the quote from the Gulag Archipelago. And remember that it will never be the same for you, your families and children once you cross that line and opt to follow unethical, immoral and unconstitutional orders from tyrants.
One of the other factors as to why this was not reported is that it happened in New Mexico and the governor (MLG) is supposedly being considered for a position in a Biden administration (Lord help us all). Rumors out of Santa Fe are that she has let it be known there were will be “no whiff of scandal” while she is being vetted. The media dutifully complied and ignored it, as well as the race baiters. They don’t want a repeat of when Richardson was knocked out of contention for a cabinet post. MLG is every bit as corrupt of Richardson.
