China on Friday added wine to the growing list of Australian goods barred from its markets in a trade war against Australia over disputes including its support for a probe into the origin of the coronavirus.
The Ministry of Commerce imposed import taxes of up to 212.1%, effective Saturday, which Australia’s trade minister said make Australian wine unsellable in China, his country’s biggest export market.
China increasingly is using its populous market as leverage to extract political concessions and increase its strategic influence.
Earlier, China stopped or reduced imports of beef, coal, barley, seafood, sugar and timber from Australia after it supported calls for a probe into the origin of the coronavirus pandemic, which began in China in December.

I thought they needed the food.
They can eat bats.
Dear Australia....Knock on our door. You’ve been a loyal supporter of our country.
Sure, go for it.
I was thinking that we could provide a source of income to them.
In spite of their draconian lockdown actions.
The Chinese are really smart, but they don’t make good domestic wine.
And don’t get me started on baiju. Ugh, spit!
> I thought they needed the food. <
Australia must be punished for daring to say the Wuhan virus started in Wuhan!
And no loss for China. I suppose some other food-producing nation will step in an fill the void.
There’s a whole world market out there besides China.
They need to get over themselves.
It’s a small country. Would hate to see it wiped out.
I am sure they do need the food.

As simple as that.
My brother and I had the conversation last night: Pets vs Food.
In China (and many other places) when times are good, people are Pets. When times are bad, they become food.
And in Communist China, the party determines when times are good or bad.
> the food is secondary and the people will starve <
Yep. We saw that in the Ukraine in Stalin’s time, and in Venezuela today. Yet so many young people rush to embrace socialism. It’s beyond stupid.
Sigh. It because they haven’t seen it with their own eyes, and they don’t read history, and as is the case with all young people (of which I was once one) have an arrogance of righteousness with no experience to back it up.
I was like that too.
China depends on Australian iron ore.
What’s that I hear? Is it the sound of democrats NOT screaming about unfair tarriffs like they did when Trump hit China with something like 25%?
Oh yeah, it’s their best buddy china so it’s ok...
Well Aussies here is how you do it.
Sell that stuff to another countries distributor, they can then turn around and sell it to the Reds. Collect distribution fees and all that.
BIG TIME..
“ I am sure they do need the food.

My sentiments, exactly.
Hey, I thought they signed a regional trade deal???????
