As COVID-19 cases soar, U.S. families weigh risks of welcoming college kids home

Nina Jain was regularly checking the nation’s COVID-19 data and holding out hope that her son Antonio, a sophomore who attends college in Iowa, could come home to Sacramento, California, for Thanksgiving this week.

Jain, who works in a government office, had her hopes dashed when she saw U.S. COVID-19 cases rise by an average of more than 168,000 per day last week. Antonio canceled his flight on Friday, hours before it was scheduled to depart, heeding public health warnings that a nationwide dispersal of college students heading home for the holidays could fuel a deadly wave of infections.

“It’s like a piece of your heart is 1,500 miles away and there’s nothing you can do about it,” said Jain, 44, whose Thanksgiving plan without Antonio involves wearing pajamas, cooking for herself and spending time with her pets by the fire. “You find solace in knowing you’re doing the right thing.”

Cynthia Wimer, 54, who lives with her husband and elderly parents in Washington, D.C., did not want to take chances when her daughter Francesca, a sophomore at Northwestern University, came home for the holidays.

So Francesca flew home wearing an N95 mask and a face shield and checked into a hotel for 14 days, where her parents delivered her meals. She tested negative on the 7th day but finished her quarantine period to be sure she would not infect her family.

College students that have gone home for Thanksgiving are adjusting to a more restricted lifestyle compared to the environment on campus where they interacted more freely, albeit wearing masks, several told Reuters.

Oh, those college kids will be so happy. Their champions, Joe and the Ho will soon be in charge.

I’d welcome them home with the news that they are paying for their own “education” from here on out.

The 20-somethings are such conformists COVID commies. My daughter won’t come over to my house because I refuse to wear a freaking face diaper- I, my wife, and my younger daughters all got the Chinese Death Plague in early October and are now immunized.

Shouting “fire!” in a crowded theater. That’s what the media and rats are doing. There ought to be a law... Oh, wait, there is!

I’m sure if the rub shoulders at a BLM protest sponsored and organized unofficially by the Democrats that is much safer.

All this is moot.

This is reverb from months and months of beating the Covid drum in the media and getting the shit pot stirred to a froth.

The elections are over. Soon Covid will fade since now those that used this topic in opposition politics are in charge. Once you own and run the shop, you suddenly see a need for pragmatic solutions and suddenly the “no price to high to pay” in order to save one baby seal turns into cost vs. benefit.

Picking up my daughter today at the airport. She’ll be home until mid January. I plan on giving her a big hug and helping her with all her stuff. I don’t plan on isolating away from her.

If she was a GOOD MOTHER and got her kid OUT of California, all the way to Iowa, she’d tell him to stay there and never come back to that gawd-forsaken state, no matter what!

Our GS was tested for Covid Monday and we probably won’t get the results until Friday because of the holiday and even though he was actively sick didn’t give him the quick test. He was very sick over the weekend , no doctor would see him but told him to go get tested. It is ridiculous, his symptoms are a high fever and extreme intestinal issues which is how he has often presented when he has Strep. A simple strep test would put everyone at ease.

In the meantime, if he really does have it there will be no intervention for a full week. I gave him HCQ and a Zpac because it won’t hurt him if he doesn’t have it and it could help if he does.

Arguing about this covid thing, i.e. the masks, social distancing, testing, quarantines, lockdowns, ad infinitum and ad nauseam, reminds me of trying to argue with climate change enablers that climate change is not caused by humans but is natural.

It's a waste of time.

I have a suggestion, how about we only run DNA amplification on the tests to a maximum of 25 times as the MANUFACTURERS instructions recommend. At 40 times as out politicians are running it the results are proven to be completely random.

Poof! No pandemic!

They really are. It’s just strange how they have totally bought into all the Covid hype.
