While the situation is complex, the fact is that Azerbaijan is far friendlier to Israel than Armenia, and the Armenians were formerly a hard left cause. The historical Armenian nationalists, the Dashnaks, were and are members of the Socialist International. And apparently the Armenians are currently bf's of the ayatollahs.
American Fundamentalist Protestants need to realize that chrstians elsewhere and throughout history have been very, very different from their own worldview.
I don’t see “balance” here so much as a lionizing of the Azerbaijanis, and a “subtle” demonization of the Armenians. Language such as claiming they are the “boyfriends of the mullahs.”
That just makes my skin crawl. But, I suppose Armenians are used to everyone hating them. That is one similarity, at least, that they share with the Jews.
It may very well be that they are making nice with the Iranians these days because they realise that they need whatever friends they can get.

From a national interest standpoint, Israeli support for the Azeris makes good sense. They’re not exactly formal allies, but this is probably probably one of the closest relationships Israel has with a Muslim country (including Jordan, for which Israel is an unofficial military backer of last resort). There was talk of an Israeli air base there in 2012.

This is not a relationship Israel will give up over Nagorno-Karabakh. From the standpoint of national interest/survival, Israel needs Armenia like a fish needs a bicycle. Whereas Azerbaijan could end up hosting Israeli airplanes for a strike on Iran. No question there as to which relationship is more important.

But
1. this land was Armenian - there are parallels with the West Bank settlements that Israel can’t ignore.
2. Tying with Azerbaijan ties with Turkey who, under Erdogan, are anti-Israel
Israel should have been more low-key in this. Azerbaijan IS an Israeli ally, but Israel should have been more low-key.
