Shelton Fed nomination fails key Senate procedure vote, possibly ending her chances

Judy Shelton's controversial nomination to the Federal Reserve suffered a possibly fatal blow Tuesday in a key procedural vote in the Senate.

The upper chamber voted 50-47 against a move that would have advanced the nomination by limiting debate, typically a death knell because the opposition simply could block the vote from ever coming to the full floor.

It's almost certainly dead. There are three solid GOP votes against her and Mark Kelly takes his seat in the Senate next month. That's 51 votes against with every Senator present.

If Rick Scott came back soon, and no other Republicans have to quarantine with the Covid because of sloppy Senate floor procedures, couldn’t she still get through? McConnell’s vote obviously switches to yes, and Lamar Alexander is not a Nay vote, he just didn’t vote.

You could get to a 49-49 tie that way, and then Pence could vote yes, and we would have a gold bug on the Fed who could act as though there’s an inflation problem during a Dem administration and cause no end of communication problems for the Fed and generally make everyone’s lives just a little bit worse. WIN!

Anything's possible but it isn't likely. Not with 50 solid votes in opposition. If anything McConnell will concentrate on judges on the few days remaining in the Senate session.

She was voted down because she wants us to go back to the gold standard. Any good reason reason why we shouldn’t? Or let’s just keep printing paper and increasing our overall debt.

Well, yeah - government wouldn't be able to spend freely on anything they want.

Not with 50 solid votes against her.

She was voted down because she wants us to go back to the gold standard.

That was one of several out-of-the-mainstream positions that she has supported in the past and seemed to backtrack on during her hearings. Regardless, even if confirmed she would be one voice out of seven on the Fed board and one voice out of twelve on the Fed Open Market Committee. Her influence would be nil.

The banking and corporate class doesn’t quite own everything yet. They must have total ivy league group think up there to keep the sheep’s focus on the Dow. Might alarm people to think they are taking over real assets and business’ through manipulation of debt instruments and lockdowns.

It’s ruins the Fed Ponzi scheme.

That’s my point. There’s not 50 votes against her. One of those was McConnell, who obviously switches back once Rick Scott is back from quarantine.

Check out the Panic of 1893 for reasons the gold standard sucks.

There will be. Scott Kelly will take his Senate seat after the holiday. So 48 Democrats and 2 Republicans makes 50. If Lamar Alexander or any other Republican is a no-show or a no vote then there's no way she is confirmed.

Right, but that’s two weeks off.

If Scott comes back before that, and Alexander and Grassley continues to be a non-voters, then it would be 49-49 and Pence’s vote could get her in.

Right, but that’s two weeks off.

You've got the Thanksgiving recess in there. The Senate won't meet again until December and by then Kelly will have been seated for Arizona. That makes 48 Democrats and 2 Republicans who have said they will not vote for her. One missing GOP Senator, and considering the toll COVID is taking on them that's not an unlikely situation and a majority vote against her. If Alexander refuses to vote then a majority is voting against her. Her chances of confirmation are very slim at best.

I just don't see it happening. If anything McConnell will try to force more judges through. I don't see this as a priority for him.
