President Trump, Sen. Lee congratulate Burgess Owens as he takes larger lead in 4th District race

President Donald Trump and Utah Sen. Mike Lee both congratulated Burgess Owens on Twitter after the latest vote totals released Friday show him with a solid lead in his race for Congress just a few days before counting ends. Owens, the former NFL safety and frequent Fox News contributor, leads Democratic Rep. Ben McAdams by 2,095 votes after Friday's update — no more votes are expected to be released this weekend. While it's unclear exactly how many votes remain to be counted in the district, Owens' margin will be difficult to overcome for the incumbent congressman.

Why is it unclear how many votes are left to count?

Good for Owens. But I positively hate the way the situation is framed. It’s not as if Owens’ opponent legitimately could do anything now to “overcome” Owers’ lead. The votes have been cast, and it’s now a matter of waiting and hoping if you are that incumbent.

It is unlikely, I take it, that enough of the outstanding votes will be for the incumbent for him to be declared the winner. Why can’t the reporter tell it like it is?

Owens is going to be solid. This is a good pick-up.

Trump won the district in 2016 by 7 percentage points. Mia love lost in 2018 by .2%. That’s one fifth of one percent. No big win here. It should have been decided on election night. Love and Owens are both black. What that means is that Mormons will always be fickle when it comes to voting for whatever reason. I think they’re Mormons first and republicans second just like jews are Democrats first and Jews second.

*************

Its unclear why anyone is still counting votes 11 days after the election. This is absurd.

The DNC ran some especially dirty ads against Owens. Those ads did not play well in Utah...even in the most liberal district in the State.

Burgess Owens is one of the 12 GOP challengers who flipped Congressional seats away from the leftists.

Not too shabby for a former Raider.

Salt Lake county is divided up between all 4 congressional districts. So out of the remaining ballots that have signature issues,(voters need to show up and make corrections) and a very small number of provisional ballots, there is not a way for them to know which congressional district the votes are for. Utah county which went overwhelmingly for Owens also has several hundred provisional and issue ballots. There are not enough ballots for McAdams to overcome Owens’ lead.

Anybody know what the breakdown of GOP v RATS re. house seats and how many races are still to be determined?

Be interesting to see what happens in redistricting. If Utah doesn’t receive a new seat, I would hope that the existing 4 would be rebalanced to shore up Owens seat. If Utah does gain a seat, however, will they split SLC among 5 districts, or will they just create a single new inner-SLC district? They’d be adding a rat seat to the HOR, but the 4 incumbent Utah GOP reps would be happy.

AP has it 219D-203R with 13 still to be determined with R leading in 11 of the 13. There's also a seat in NJ-7 where AP has it called for the rat but some sites have uncalled it with the GOP down 1 point but gaining.
