Collins Congratulates Biden on ‘Apparent Victory', Urges Patience on Election Results

Sen. Susan Collins of Maine offered her congratulations to President-elect Joe Biden on his "apparent victory," saying Monday that he and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris "should be given every opportunity to ensure that they are ready to govern on January 20th."

Collins, who won her own close race last week, is one of a handful Republicans who have congratulated Biden while President Donald Trump, who has yet to concede, continues to call the result of the election into question, without giving evidence to back up his claims of wrongdoing.

Collins said Biden "loves this country, and I wish him every success." But she also noted that Trump has a right to challenge the results of the results in the 2020 Election.

"I understand that the President and others have questions about the results in certain states. There is a process in place to challenge those results and, consistent with that process, the President should be afforded the opportunity to do so," Collins said in a statement.

Maine's wiliest politician sticks a pin in Biden's eye while pretending to congratulate him, as a sop to the moderate voters who re-elected her.

Because it’s the law... evidently in the squishy rule of

You’d better believe it. The last GOP president who won in Maine was Reagan, during his 1984 49-state sweep. And even Reagan lost in 1980. In Maine, Trump had coattails. But negative ones. Collins does better in non-presidential years. Fortunately, she’s only 67. I figure that she’ll win if she runs again in 2026. When she quits or passes on, Maine will be solid blue, and by 20% margins (the Dem senator’s victory margin in 2018, running against a Republican and one other Dem).

When she’s wearing a hat of reason she is magnificient. Justice Kavanaugh was her finest hour. This is also a classy example of speaking the facts.
Even when at odds with Trump, she is what I call an “honorable” opponent. She reminds me of the way the opposition once showed respect in the middle of strong disagreement. I long for that time now.

She’s not at odds with Trump. It’s a pose. Lying is something politicians have to do to keep their jobs when their constituents disagree with them.

Some Freepers say Collins is no different from a Democrat. If she were, they wouldn’t run anyone against her or spend $100m* trying to take her out that could have been used elsewhere. Without her, ME would be solid blue. She’s a wily political operator, and more conservative than all Democrat senators except for Manchin. But Manchin is in a solid red state that has Republicans in pretty much all statewide offices and gave Trump a 45% margin. (So he’s somewhat moderate just to survive politically). Whereas Trump lost Maine, underperforming Collins by 7%. By Maine standards, Collins is so right-wing, she might as well be Barry Goldwater and Joe McCarthy rolled into one. Yet she keeps winning.

I think people forget that in one man, one vote systems, pols are elected to be followers of the popular will, not leaders. Alexander the Great could lead because he could kill** anyone who disagreed. Pols in democratic systems cannot. Collins is far more conservative than her electorate. Manchin is far more liberal. In each of their ways, both are excellent water carriers for their respective parties.

** And when he died, his entire clan was wiped out - mother, wife, kids, et al.

Collins is short a full bag of potatoes by half.

A hamburger short of French Fries.

A politician short of integrity.

Because of Maine’s rocky terrain, the old say goes that “Maine’s two top crops are potatoes and rocks”. Collins is the latter.

It gets us half a GOP senator from Maine, which is really as good as we can realistically hope for.

Notice how they all say that. I posit that there is no evidence the truth-deniers would accept.

No doubt. A purist couldn’t survive and the seat would go RAT. Better a wishy-washy Pubbie than a dedicated baby-killer.

Being safe for another 6 years we can also probably count on her for more tight USSC votes if the opportunity arises.

It’s BS calculated to stampede him into conceding. Very Pravda-esque, but typical of today’s media. In many ways, this is good - the mask of objectivity, without the substance, has slipped all the way towards blatant propaganda, which makes it much easier to routinely reject their pronouncements.

That is how she has held office as a Republican (of sorts) in a liberal state all these years. One does not get to be a successful politician by having principles, you know.

Remember, it only takes one bullet out of six or ten in a revolver/semi-automatic to kill someone. Collins is undependable. You can’t turn your back on her and trust her to do the right thing at the right time (see the Kavanaugh hearings).

Enunciating your principles in full when your electorate disagrees with you is something only someone who’s tired of electoral politics would do. Manchin’s not a moderate. He’s a liberal. But he’ll pretend to be a moderate all day to stay in office, much as a partisan in Vichy France would pretend to be OK with Nazi occupation to be able to continue resistance operations.
