Ichabod (Hebrew: אִיכָבוֹד ʼīyḵāḇōḏ, without glory, or "where is the glory?") is mentioned in the first Book of Samuel as the son of Phinehas, a malicious priest at the biblical shrine of Shiloh, who was born on the day that the Israelites' Ark of God was taken into Philistine captivity. His mother went into labour due to the shock of hearing that her husband and Eli, her father-in-law, had died and that the Ark had been captured. He is also named later as the brother of Ahitub.[1]
In the Book of 1 Samuel, his name is said to mean the glory has departed from Israel, because of the loss of the Ark to the Philistines, and a lesser reference to the deaths of Eli and Phinehas. She repeats the phrase "The glory has departed from Israel, for the ark of God has been captured", to show her piety,[2] and that the public and spiritual loss lay heavier upon her spirit than her personal or domestic calamity.[3] Yairah Amit suggests that his name indicates "the fate of this newborn child who would have no parents, no grandfather and not even God, because even the glory has departed from the place".[4]
According to biblical commentator Donald Spence Jones, "the meaning of the term I-chabod is much disputed, owing to the doubt which hangs over the first syllable, "I", followed by "chabod". It is usually taken to mean a simple negative: "not": chabod signifying "glory", I-chabod thus represents "not glory", i.e., there is no glory. Others render the "I" syllable as a rhetorical question, "Where?", "Where is the glory?", the answer, of course, being, "It is nowhere". But the best rendering seems to be to understand the syllable "I" as an exclamation of bitter sorrow, "Alas!": the name then could be translated, "Alas! the glory".[5]
The Septuagint states that his name was a complaint: Uaebarchaboth, woe to the glory of Israel.[6] The Codex Vaticanus Graecus 1209 also refers to him as ouai barchaboth, i.e. as I Bar Chabod - I, son of Chabod or No, son of Glory. According to textual scholars,[7] this section of the Book of Samuel, the sanctuaries source, derives from a fairly late source compared with other parts, and hence this justification of his name may simply be a folk etymology.
While Ichabod is barely mentioned in the Hebrew Bible, the fact that Ahitub is elsewhere referred to as the brother of Ichabod, rather than as son of Phinehas (or of anyone else), has led textual scholars to suspect that Ichabod was considered a significant individual in the days of Samuel.[7]
I hear that all the time. So all the people in the pro-life movement, millions of them, don’t count?
Yet God would have spared Gomorrah for TEN righteous men. We have way more righteous men and women here. And even a higher % than in Sodom than 10 men.
No, I don’t buy the judgement of God thing. Otherwise, God lied to Abraham.
So-there werent 10 righteous men in Jerusalem when Rome sacked it and plowed it with salt? There were thousands of Christians who had to flee. Even Jesus warns His churches in Revelation 2-3 to repent or they will be judged.
Ping
58,000 soliders, who died with honor on the battlefield in fighting too stop the spread of communism isn’t a hidden sin.
Every time I hear
Judgement,
I Hear
“Redeemer!”
Well we are in judgement.
But Vietnam War Vets hardly qualify for that judgement.
*Abortion
*Sodomy & the promotion of it
*Transgenderism and every other form of mental illness as ‘normal’
*A fornicating adulterous population
*A drug-addicted & drunken generation (or 4)
*Pop-culture, porn, and a lying media
*Ignoring God daily
*Raising Godless violent demon-children
*Etc...ad nauseum
Whatever bloodbath follows this nation as it approaches to dumpster bin of history, we deserve it.
True, but since Israel rejected her Messiah, in God’s eyes - there wasn’t one “righteous man” in Jerusalem when it was destroyed.
Josephus among others said not one Christian died in the sack of Rome in 70AD.
They all fled because they thought it was Matthew 24 being played right before their eyes.
Bkmrk this most excellent post!
A lot of righteous people died in Rome. There were a lot of righteous people that didnt follow Hitler that died when bombs fell on Germany. You cannot take Gods dealing with Abraham and Lot and apply it to the entire economy of Gods plan. It doesnt work that way. Its mishandling the Wors of God. A simple look through the Book of Acts proves this doesnt apply.
Here’s the thing if Trump overwhelmingly lost that would be one thing thus this nation would get what it totally deserves.
But he didn’t he won by we the people Biden has been placed in by artificial means i.e. technocrat ballot harvest not to mention some the states whom voted strong anti-abortion laws etc. etc. I don’t see total destruction by judgment I do see a great shaking on the horizon though.
You’re splitting hairs too Nelson.
