Mississippians voted decisively Tuesday to make the In God We Trust banner the states official flag.
With 76% of precincts reporting, the Associated Press called the referendum in favor of the new flag design. It had received 69.6% of the votes at that point.
With 92 percent of the precincts in on Wednesday, support for the flag had climbed to 71.6 percent and 726,130 votes.
The flag will replace the 1894 design that featured the Confederate emblem after it was removed from display at Government buildings through a June vote by the Mississippi state legislature and a bill signed by Republican Gov. Tate Reeves.
For State Rep. Jeramey Anderson of Moss Point, Tuesdays vote was the culmination of a decades-long effort.
Im definitely excited to see Mississippians found a need to vote for a more progressive and inclusive symbol that unites the state, Anderson told the Sun Herald over the phone. One thing I said when the House passed the ball is that my predecessor (Billy Bloomfield) worked on this issue for 21 years. I was just the person to press the button.
This is not something that just belongs to currently serving House and Senate members. Its been a long-term process that had so many moving parts.
It was up to a nine-person commission to design a new flag and the New Magnolia version won out by an 8-1 vote over the Great River Flag

The new flag isn't bad.
At least this will drive the atheists/Mikey Weinstein/Freedom from Religion Foundation folks nuts.
Can’t say I fault what they did.
No picture?
>>The new flag features a white magnolia on a blue background with red bars on both ends. The flower is encircled by 20 white stars that signify Mississippis status as the nations 20th state, a single gold star at the top that represents the states Native American people and the motto In God We Trust at the bottom.
What no rainbow and upraised fist?
It has a magnolia on it. The flag during slavery had a magnolia on it. Did they think this through?
It is their state flower since forever.
This is just a transition.
What a coincidence! Michigan had a 126 year old man cast a vote in this election.
where is a pic of the old flag?!!! I got kids learning and watching... compare and contrast. Please..
This means that racism is over in Mississippi.
Thank you to both of you.
FUGLY
I saw fist as fish & wondered what’s an upraised fish?? Long day ; )
I like the new flag.
The New Magnolia flag is anchored in the center field by a clean and modern magnolia blossom, a symbol long used to represent our state and the hospitality of our citizens. The New Magnolia also represents Mississippis sense of hope and rebirth, as the magnolia often blooms more than once and has a long blooming season. The New Magnolia is sleek and updated to represent the forward progression of Mississippi.
The circle of 20 stars represents Mississippi as the 20th state of the United States of America and is anchored by the gold five-point star, which stands alone. This star represents our first peoples, the indigenous Native American tribes of the land that would become Mississippi.
The color blue in the main field of the flag echoes the blue of the American flag, representing vigilance, justice, perseverance, while the bands of red represent hardiness and valor. The gold lines and the gold stamen of the New Magnolia are a nod to the rich cultural history of Mississippi, specifically the visual arts, literature, music and performing arts to originate in our state. Dear NikKi Haley, The old one was better.
“It has a magnolia on it. The flag during slavery had a magnolia on it. Did they think this through?”
So funny.
