Republican challenger Nicole Malliotakis declared victory Tuesday night over Rep. Max Rose in the citys only high-stakes congressional race but the Democratic incumbent said thousands of mail-in ballots still need to be counted.
Malliotakis, a state Assemblywoman who previous ran for mayor, was leading with over 57% of the votes Wednesday morning with 95% of the district reporting, polls show. But the Associated Press has not yet called a winner.
I need to thank President Trump for his strong support and endorsement, Malliotakis said in a victory speech late Tuesday. Today, Staten Island and Southern Brooklyn sent a loud and clear message. And that message will resonate from the halls of City Hall to the halls of Congress.
First-term Democrat Rose pointed to more than 40,000 absentee ballots that still need to be counted, with potentially 10,000 more in the mail.
As a soldier who fought for our democracy. I believe every vote must be counted. I know my opponent will join me in ensuring that the Board of Elections must conduct a fair and transparent process that demonstrates the strength of our democracy, not undermines it, Rose said in a statement Tuesday night.
While we wait for the official results to be declared, I want to assure the people of Staten Island and Brooklyn that our work will continue," he said.
New Yorks 11th Congressional District which includes all of Staten Island and a portion of southern Brooklyn had traditionally voted Republican until Rose, a 33-year-old U.S. Army veteran, flipped the seat in 2018. He was the first Democrat to win the district since 2010.
