Only one newspaper in California endorsed Trump for president

There's just one newspaper in California endorsing Donald Trump for president - but it's perhaps not a surprise.

For the second presidential election in a row, the Santa Barbara News-Press is the state's only newspaper to formally endorse Trump. The endorsement, written by News-Press owner Wendy McCaw, uses many common right-wing talking points, like calling the coronavirus pandemic the "Wuhan virus," raising fears of socialism and falsely accusing Democratic leaders of using violence to maintain power.

"Basically it boils down to freedom and opportunity versus dictatorship and socialism - the government in every area of our lives versus the constitutional freedoms we now enjoy," McCaw writes.

Just a handful of other newspapers have endorsed Trump for a second term. Among them are the New York Post, Las Vegas Review-Journal and Boston Herald.

What about the Orange County Register? Orange County, California is quite Libertarian to Republican leaning. I would expect this county’s main paper to endorse Trump’s re-election. Did they?

They probably had to gingerly tap dance their way through the gruesome street deposits, or else they had to "tiptoe through the tulips" (so to speak).

Even in Russia and in China and in Cuba, there are people who support Trump. So, why not in California?

“Orange County, California is quite Libertarian to Republican leaning”

It was not so long ago that OC was Stone Cold Republican John Birch Society Far Right.

Then the idiots let in tens of thousands of illegals and third world legal aliens to “do the jobs them damn Americans just won’t do” and now those same aliens are busy voting them out of their homes with Rat party thugs who raise taxes sky high, give preferences to the aliens, shrug at violent crime (they’re just protesting, right?),and generally engage in gleefully tearing down the civilization that existed there.

Cheap labor is always way more expensive then it’s advertised to be. Like when it costs you your country.

Orange County used to be all Republican. the Orange County Register a premier Republican newspaper. we had long runs with Republican governors and a Californian who became president Reagan.

But Orange County took the bulk of Vietnamese after the war and it has great food,...but bad politics. very sad, indeed!

So? How many newspapers in the entire country endorsed Trump? It’s irrelevant, but big newspapers and big media are so full of themselves they don’t realize it.

The OC Register went bankrupt in 2016 & has been liberal ever since.

I live in Huntington Beach, CA-48.

The main reason it has gone liberal is because all the Conservatives have moved out. In 2018 Dana Rohrabacher lost to Harley Rouda & flipped it Blue. Rouda is backed by the white, wealthy Libtards in the southern part of this district - Laguna......

Hopefully we are turning that around today & Michele Steel will kick his ass. The Vietnamese are behind Steel & they have had many Trump parades around Westminster for the last month. They don’t like Communism.

RE: But Orange County took the bulk of Vietnamese after the war and it has great food,...but bad politics. very sad, indeed!

Why would Vietnamese, who fled communism to come to America, want to
Vote for politicians who are in effect, sympathetic to Communists?

Thank you for bringing us up to date.

The Register and its sister newspapers in Colorado Springs and Ohio were at the forefront of libertarian, free-market, individualist thought for decades when they were owned by the Hoiles family.

Unlike big-city papers like the LA Times, LA and SF Examiners and most others on the West Coast, the Register took an editorial position opposing the rounding up of Nisei (second-generation Japanese American citizens) during WWII. Hoiles considered Roosevelt's action in violation of the Constitution and convicting innocent people without evidence.

Having been a subscriber to the Register until leaving California in the late '60s, I cannot recall any candidate for office ever getting the paper's editorial endorsement.

That would include Goldwater in 1964 and Reagan in 1966, both of whom carried Orange County by healthy margins even absent the Register's endorsement. It may have been their policy in those days to bring unbiased news to the public so each voter can make an informed decision on who to vote for.

I'll drink to that.
