LIGHTHOUSE POINT — Two men are accused of driving from Miami-Dade to Lighthouse Point to steal mail — including two mail-in ballots — from a drop box at a post office.
According to the arrest reports, Junior Alexander Cabral, 28, and Vladimir Cabral Cuevas, 20, were spotted in a white Honda CRV next to a mailbox at 2091 N.E. 36th St. about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday.
They lingered there long enough to attract the attention of an officer on patrol. During questioning, he noticed a bag of mail wedged between the front seat and center console. He also saw a device used to fish mail out of the drop box and the two ballots separated from the rest of the mail.
Cabral and Cuevas were charged with stealing ballots, fraud, and petit theft, records show.
At their first court appearances Thursday morning, Broward Judge Corey Amanda Cawthon expressed concerns about the allegations, especially so close to Election Day.
“I’m not going to speculate as to the intentions behind the allegations, what mail was intended to be recovered or not," she said. "But, I do have to take notice of the fact we have a very big election coming up next week and the timing seems to be aggravating in Mr. Cabral’s case.”

They were probably just trying to steal packages and parcels and checks and credit cards and IDs, not necessarily out ballot hunting.

No of course it’s not OK. Just sayin’ the ballot angle helps get more clicks to the story. But there are plenty of video montages out there (mostly taken from CCTV cameras or Ring camera doorbells) of parcel thieves - some are quite clever to avoid being filmed using those cardboard movie stand ups with the eyes cut out to hide their faces. Eventually there will be enough cameras out there that these types of thieves won’t be able to work in their desired field of endeavor.
I thought messing with any aspect of the U. S. Mail was a federal offense. It doesn’t look like anyone in power thinks it even warrants an arrest/trial/conviction/prison sentence!
Commit a federal mail felony for 2 ballots?
