Governor Northam Signs Ban on No-Knock Warrants Among Police Reform Legislation (VIRGINIA)

Gov. Ralph Northam has signed new laws he says will significantly advance police and criminal justice reform in Virginia. Northam says he has been working with legislators on the measures since early summer, when the deaths of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor led to a national reckoning on racial bias in policing. “Too many families, in Virginia and across our nation, live in fear of being hurt or killed by police,” said Northam. “These new laws represent a tremendous step forward in rebuilding trust between law enforcement and the communities they serve. I am grateful to the legislators and advocates who have worked so hard to make this change happen. Virginia is better, more just, and more equitable with these laws on our books.”

Same here. He’s a milquetoast, pantywaist, coward ... etc. The far Left has been able to push him their way easily ... he wanted to hold on to his job after the Blackface incident & has had his lips firmly glued to the rear ends of a certain segment of the population ever since. Mayor Stoney is a good example of those with permanent lip prints.

Richmond, “City of Monuments” & beautiful Monument Avenue have been ruined by “wokeness” & riots ... a lot of tourist dollars from people wanting to visit will now dry up - nothing to see anymore. It’s a good example of cutting off your nose to spite your face. I remember the World Championship bike race held in Richmond some years ago (Peter Sagan won) .... announcers going on & on about how beautiful Monument Avenue was.... now the statues are gone. Many businesses along Broad Street are now boarded up. I was born in the City, live in the ‘burbs ... I refuse to set foot in the city for any reason except perhaps being required to go the hospital.

Anyway, Coonman will ‘get his’ one of these days and since he’s a baby killer, or at least advocates for it, including what amounts to ‘execution’ after birth, he’ll be dealt with by a “higher power” one of these days and he should be afraid .... very afraid, of the consequences.

“No-knocks should be banned except for hostage-type situations.”

As I recall, they were introduced to deny residents the time needed to flush drugs down the toilet. If you can surround a residence, there’s no need for a no-knock just to arrest somebody.

If you have a hostage situation, you don’t need a warrant, do you?

Dunno.
I’m good with doing away with no-knock warrants.
Some of the other stuff really sucks, though.

Note that there is still a process for no-knock ,just requires a waiver according to the article you posted.

No-knock raids and assest forfeiture have corrupted peace officers for too long. Past time to correct them.

Another bad influence on police is the TV cop shows glorifying violence; the officer that can resolve a situation with no one injured or killed is a better officer.

led to a national reckoning on racial bias

Man, how many times have I read this exact line? The ol' propaganda press really has their talking points down.

The horror stories of them raiding the wrong people, even if you survive, probably going to have some kind of trauma resulting. It’s too much power to just storm a home. “

Agree 100 percent.

All the fake offense is related to criminals that forcefully resisted arrest.

The point is that no amount of niceness nor understanding can prevent a criminal from resisting arrest and endangering the arresting officers. The glorification in America is of black criminality dutifully resisting arrest as a basic human right

Resisting and endangering cops while actually violating the civil rights of the cops justifiably results in self induced physical harm to the criminal.

This is a sad story. As several other posters alluded to, this was a hostage situation where the man in the apartment had already killed 4 young children. Yet...the officer had to knock. One shot in the head. Agree that the Sergeant who ordered the door be kicked in did break policy, but had they arrived and stormed the apartment sooner 4 innocent lives may have been saved.

I’m guessing this is going to be a no win situation all the way round.

Agreed.

MOST of it.

“How the hell do they catch folks who do not want to be caught? Especially if they are dangerous? Show up at the front door holding a daisy and ask politely to come on in and arrest them? Geez.”

Surround the house, then execute the warrant.

No knock is anti-American.

I hear you but it seems times are changing. Things that made sense and the legal tools used 40 years ago, and that were exercised cautiously only when needed, are now abused far too often, both from the top down and from bad apples at the bottom. I can see exceptions where no-knocks are necessary, but the recent headlines show a propensity to use them far too routinely in some jurisdictions.

From your article:
“It also violated Fourth Amendment protections against unlawful search and seizure, he said.”

BS!

Officers had reason to believe a felony was being committed which endangered, immediately, those in the apartment.

No warrant of any kind was required.

The ban on no-knock warrants is justified, and overdue IMO. This is an example of a stopped clock being inadvertently correct.

My problem is the abuse of the system in no knock warrants. There have been fatal errors of address and frankly corrupt cops as was the case in Houston were two innocents were killed. Those cops are going to jail and most deservedly so. The cops lied to obtain the warrant and the confidential informant did not exist. The cops also lied about what transpired during the shooting. Houston will pay millions of dollars for this action.

I am a law abiding citizen and armed to the teeth and very adept with weapons. If someone busted down my door in the middle of the night I would make the valid assumption it was bad guys. I would reach for my bedside weapon and fight. I might take one out but probably not. Due to superior weaponry and surprise they would take I and my wife out.

I do not wish to do away with no knock warrants. I want the procedure to obtain one much more stringent and exact. There has been abuse.

Relative to criticism of the cops it is valid in only a very few cases. Good cops hate bad cops more than we do. The vast majority of the cops are the good guys and on your side.

SUPPORT YOUR COPS, THEY ARE THE GOOD GUYS!
