Both Germany and France announced new nationwide lockdowns on Wednesday as Europe enters a deadly new phase of the coronavirus pandemic.
Chancellor Angela Merkel says German officials have agreed to a four-week shutdown of restaurants, bars, cinemas, theaters and other leisure facilities in a bid to curb a sharp rise in coronavirus infections.
Merkel and the country's 16 state governors, who are responsible for imposing and easing restrictions, agreed on the partial lockdown in a videoconference Wednesday. It is set to take effect Monday and last until the end of November.
Merkel said, "We must act, and now, to avoid an acute national health emergency."

It breaks my heart to see these kids jumping off the bus, wearing masks, though 😩
I agree that the mandates in socialist states crammed full of foreigners haven’t helped. My area is by far Republican and has no mandates, but nearly everyone wears the masks in public places including teenagers and kids. We know that most of our big, fat farmers are over 70 or 80 years of age. They all wear masks in indoor public places. If many of them stop working, food prices will go up. If many big, fat store employees fall out, same thing. Ditto for big, fat truck drivers.
Like I posted for the last six months, I do not care about the number of cases until you define what a case is. What I care about is a number of deaths. Sweden has a practically nil death count. Still.
I posted the death count.
See comment #12.
Neither have learned locking things down doesn’t work or they wouldn’t be dealing with it spreading now.
Merkel said, “We must act, and now, to avoid an acute national health emergency.”...
Where have we heard that before...sheesh!
Sweden is in bad shape compared to Japan and Japan has a greater population density than the USA and over 100 million people so one third as much as the USA. Japan haven’t broken a hundred thousand total cases if they were like the USA they should have one third as much as US. Ask yourself why not? They have the same or greater population density than NYC in every one of their cities. They never shut down mass transit for longer than a few weeks while they put in social distancing. What’s different? Well having spent month’s in Japan I will enlighten the group. The Japanese wear masks religiously everywhere, everyone and all the time. Sorry antimask idiots Japan is THE example of how to deal with an airborne contagion. Again for the mentally challenged Japan with 100 million people at high density never locked down never shut down the subways past a few weeks and has less total cases than we have deaths by half. It’s the masks stupid.
Last time I was in Japan they disinfected the touch objects in every train/bus operation at least daily. And yes mask wearing in pretty much universal.
Also, it’s possible Japan’s numbers are actually more accurate. According to the CDC only 6% of those deaths in the US were actually cv-19 deaths the rest of them are people who died that happen to have cv-19 when they died but also had other comorbidities.
I’m 67 and I would rather get cv-19 than the flu.
According to the CDC, that number should be multiplied by .06.
The flu is deadlier and kills healthy young people.
Saw it. I’ve been following their stats since I heard about their response. From many sources and angles. Thats why I keep bringing it up.
‘Its the masks stupid....’
time for your nap, Dr. Fauci...
‘Sorry antimask idiots Japan is THE example of how to deal with an airborne contagion.’
really...? from October 15-28, Japan has had 7,975 cases; Sierra Leone, in Africa, on of the most squalid, filthy and maskless places on earth has had 41 cases for the same time period...seems to me the grubby Africans get it about right...
Like getting sick is going to stop you from voting. You would have to be weak ass because there isnt any disease out there that is virulent and lethal enough to do that in the next 5 days. Coronavirus sure as hell wont do it and everything has an incubation period. Everything you have been told about coronavirus is false.
And Sweden still has a viable economy.
Japan is probably also beneficiary of the situation that they appear to be absolutely obsessively fastidious about cleanliness in the toilet arena.
Incredible traffic jam in Paris as people try to leave the city before 9 pm curfew and before confinement begins at midnight. Traffic is barely moving in every direction as far as the eye can see. Lots of honking and frustrated drivers. pic.twitter.com/6Zn2HCxuPl— Michael E. Webber (@MichaelEWebber) October 29, 2020
