SHASTA COUNTY, Calif. Shasta County deputies are looking for a suspect who robbed a gas station in Cottonwood Tuesday morning.
The robbery happened around 3 a.m. Tuesday at the 4th Street Chevron in Cottonwood. Deputies were searching the area for a suspect who was armed with a pistol.
"He came in, he had got gas, he had paid for it. Walked out came back in to try and buy stuff... well when he went to go buy stuff that is when he popped the question and said give me all the money," said Erica Evans, Manager, Chevron.
The gas station, located just off I-5 stays busy, with customers filtering throughout any given day.
Most customers wearing a mask in accordance with public health guidelines, but what happens when a mask is also being used to disguise someone's identity?
"He had a face covering, covering pretty much his whole face his eyes stuck out just slightly, he had a baseball cap on and a big black hoodie. he was all blacked out," said Evans.
Video captured on the gas stations surveillance system shows the moments before the suspect told the cashier he had a gun and to empty the register. Evans says the gun was never actually shown to the employee.
Employees say they felt the man was acting strange, but couldn't ask for him to remove his mask.
"Its for their safety, your safety, their safety they don't have to remove it. It is a big concern though of mine. I am very against the mask, I hate it. It covered his whole face, I cant tell you any facial features. I cant tell you eye color, mustache, no mustache, I cant tell you anything about him," said Evans.
With cash in hand, the suspect, described as a heavy set- white male fled the area in a white car with a convertible top.
The lack of details now in the hands of the Shasta County Sheriffs Office.
"This threw us back about 20 feet. I am looking at it like what are we going to do. I got employees that are scared to come to work, I got employees that don't want to work late. I have females that work for me I work myself, I have had to work the graveyard shift," said Evans.
I suspect this is why my bank(s) are largely operating as drive-through only.
Go ahead and wear your mask, but go ahead and stay outside as well.
I do recall one secure door system that locked each side of the foyer until you were granted access in and out (made you pass through a metal detector). Customers could only enter one at a time.
In New Orleans it is illegal to wear a mask in public except on Mardi Gras....................I wonder how they handle this?...............

I dont care if the store is in the safest town in the safest state in America. No store should admit any person at that time. You wanna buy something? Then go to the window, and make your request.
I was in New Orleans a few weeks ago. Everyone was wearing masks. They’re mandated in every public space.
If he got gas, his car is likely on camera. Not very forward thinking.
I thought the governor wiped that off the books (temporarily) - it’s an emergency, don’t you know?
Probably did..................
Consider the complications of a gang, dressed alike,
all enter the store but only one robs it...
Going as planned
