A recent uptick in violent crime in South Los Angeles and in other parts of the city could be related to the pandemic and the increased stress placed on community members, LAPD Chief Michel Moore said Friday.
I have a 14-year-old aspiring football player who was gunned down and lost his life, said Deputy Chief Regina Scott. Just this week, I had a 19-year-old kid that had graduated from high school who has done everything we had asked him to do, and he lost his life I reach out to the community that the Police Department cant do this alone..."
Some of the increase in violence could be attributed to the coronavirus pandemic and associated stress felt by the community, particularly social distancing.
We are social animals, Moore said. We exist as an entity that works better when we work together. And this pandemic is interrupting all of that. And its assisting in my belief to fueling that, not just here in Los Angeles but across the country.
Lawrence Tolliver, a life-long South L.A. resident and owner of Tollivers Barber Shop, said hes not surprised by the spike in shootings, but is concerned...
The schools, the churches, the barber shops the beauty salons, anywhere where people can congregate and express their opinion, there has to be someone saying This is the right course for you to take, Tolliver said.
Downs added: We have little kids, 10 year olds, getting into gangs. Thats not right. Ten-year-olds should be in school. They should have fun and go outside and feel safe and protected, not being confronted by someone or being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Both men also said they believe having consistent community dialogue with police is necessary.

Covid, the new climate change.
The pandemic, or the lockdowns? One is caused by a virus, the other is largely caused by democrat politicians.
But, we have to believe the science!! Never a media follow-up to this, like, give me a specific, what science & data are you referring to?
The real reason: gang violence
And the indulgence of gang violence by the city goverment.
They all died peacefully.
And I though the increase in crime was due to the Sheriff letting everyone out of jail and the LAPD refusing to Arrest Criminals. How stupid am I?
Violence caused by the Wuhan Flu, not BLM, ANTIFA, and Defund the Police campaigns.
Reticence of police, blaming of police and coddling of criminals. All three overwhelmingly the fault of the left, though the GOP has some small blame.
So the virus makes people act violent. Follow the science.
If true; why are they releasing people from the prisons due to the virus?
I disagree; I think its the lockdowns which make people violent. Both Red States and Blue States have been hit by the virus, but mostly only the Deep Blue cities are being racked by violence - which are under much more strict lockdowns decreed by Deep Blue politicians.
The reason prisoners are being released is because of Deep Blue politicians, who somehow find doing this to be in their interest.

Like a lack of proper policing...?

NO, the shutdown and local regime suppression of law enforcement did 100 percent of it.
