The United States and India have reaffirmed their defensive and security relationship, as Washington continues to rally allies in Asia amid concerns over increased Chinese military activity in the region.
In a meeting Monday in the Indian capital, US Secretary of Defense Mark Esper and his Indian counterpart Rajnath Singh discussed "military to military cooperation" and the upcoming Malabar naval exercises, according to a statement from the Indian defense ministry.
The statement also indicated that the two sides would sign the Basic Exchange and Cooperation Agreement (BECA) to enable greater geo-spatial information-sharing.
The Malabar drills, which will be held in the Indian Ocean next month, will feature all members of the so-called Quad, an informal alliance of the US, India, Japan and Australia, which has been proposed by some as a potential "Asian NATO," intended to counterbalance Chinese military strength in the region.

No! Or rather, ONLY IF ALL INDIANS GO HOME and H1B ended. Otherwise, let China nuke that cesspool
LOL. I was going to suggest the same thing. Take back you H-1Bs or you get nothing.
Asian NATO. Great.
Do we send back all H1B workers to fight if war breaks out?
Or do American soldiers go and die in their place?
[singing] Himalayan standoff -- Good Times -- Chinese commie ripoffs -- Good Times...
The headline is misleading, this is not a “defensive agreement” where we agree to come to each other’s aid if attacked. That still takes a treaty, ratified by the Senate.
It is a “defense agreement” where we agree to share info, hold joint exercises, and otherwise help each other out. If there ever is a fight against China, it is infinitely easier if you already have worked with other countries and understand how their military forces operate beforehand.
Brilliant plan - push India into Russia’s arms and/or to make a compromise with China like the Philippines did.
Brilliant / sarcasm off
We send them weapons only as we don’t need to send troops as they have a billion people in their country. Also they must cut back their h-1b visas by 90% or no deal
India has a pretty competent military.
What they're looking for is
1. something more for China to think about if it wants to try Himalayan adventures
2. ability to buy American tech to counter China
from the article The signing of the BECA agreement, as indicated in the joint statement from the defense chiefs, would likely give New Delhi access to US geo-spatial intelligence, potentially improving the accuracy of Indian weapons systems along the frontier.
And H1Bs are a business question - caused by American business and visa policies, that's the US's problem to close, not India's.
Excellent. Getting India on board with the other Democracies in the region and formally adding it to our list of allies has been a major foreign policy goal for decades.
True this isnt a formal treaty of alliance, but this is an important step.
If India wants to quickly build a serious and credible deterrent to the Chinese, they’ll close a deal for US fighter jets instead of endlessly dithering and trying to build their own, as they’ve done for the last two decades. If China does simply step in and grab vast swathes of Indian territory, there’s not much India can currently do about it short of nuclear war.
LOL! Then the Indians can screw up the Russian computers with half-assed coding.
Well, anything to get them out of our country. And again, they and China can then kill each other off. Two less cesspools would improve the planet. Oh, but Russia has more sense than invite India to infest them—besides, can you imagine millions of Indians moving to Russia?
Oh now you expect me to read the whole article?!? or even half :)
thank you for that info
The H1Bs? Many have already got permanent residence - you can't "get them out" if they don't commit a crime.
And furthermore, you really want to push India into an alliance with Russia and China?
The Chinese and Indians won't kill each other off
No worries - essentially if India gets info from the USA that will make them big friends of Uncle Sam and the USA can expect a quid pro quo in containing the Islamic world and China.
That’s another Trump diplomatic victory
