~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland

MDaberdeen1

Aberdeen Proving Ground was established in 1917 as an answer to an immediate need for national defense. As a result of entering World War I in April 1917, the Army urgently required a new site for testing war munitions. The Army needed a larger, less populated space than what was then available at Fort Hancock, New Jersey. The search eventually landed on an area along the western shore of the Chesapeake Bay near the city of Aberdeen, Maryland.

MDaberdeen6

Aberdeen Proving Ground is recognized as one of the world’s most important research, development, testing and evaluation facilities for military weapons and equipment, and supports teams of military and civilian scientists, research engineers, technicians and administrators.

MDaberdeen5

APG is the Defense Department’s Center for Excellence for C4ISR (Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, and Reconnaissance); Chemical and Biological Defense; Research and Development; Test and Evaluation; Public Health; and Personnel Security Investigation.

A $1 billion research and development resource, and a key player in the nation’s homeland defense and international counter-terrorism efforts, APG is an economic and technology resource for the region. With more than 18,000 civilians and Soldiers at the Army’s oldest proving ground, APG remains Harford County’s largest employers and one of the largest in the state of Maryland.

MDaberdeen4

Other parts of APG not attached to the main installation include the Churchville Test Area in Harford County, and the Carroll Island and Graces Quarters in Baltimore County, Maryland. The Churchville Test Area is a test track with hills that provide steep natural grades and tight turns to stress engines, drivetrains, and suspensions for army vehicles, including M1 Abrams tanks, Bradley Fighting Vehicles, and Humvees.

No the Ordnance Museum and tank collection were relocated to Fort Lee after the last BRAC. I would drive by almost every day, watching th collection dwindle away. Now it is just a big empty field with one 16” cannon. The museum building is empty. Originally it was supposed to house the Signal Corps & Electronics collection that came with us from Fort Monmouth but I guess it is still in storage somewhere on post now.

Howdy, radu!

Hope it’s been a good day for you. It’s COLD here! 28 degrees and feels like about 17. I guess I have gotten my winter wish. LOL!

Howdy, luvie.

Uh HUH! Ya gotta be careful what you wish for. LOL
Man, that’s a hard hit of cold weather! We’re glad it isn’t moving this far east. We had 70 today and 60s are in store the rest of the week. We should get a good soaking from Zeta Wed. and Thurs. and that’s fine with us. The water table needs a good bump after the long dry spell we’ve had.

I think the ice storm in N Texas and OK has just about ruined their cotton crops. So be happy with the 60s you’ll have.

Howdy, PRO.

Did you get any snow over the weekend?

It’s still comfortably warm here for the next week at least - - 60s with lows not too chilly.

Oh noooooo! An ice storm? I’ve been away from the TV and computer most of the day and didn’t know about that. That stinks for the farmers with crops still in the fields. :-(

We’re quite happy with our temps. Just right. Even the nights won’t be cold. The rain coming in is a disappointment for the farmers who still haven’t finished harvesting though.

OH man, what a job, breaking things and blowing up stuff.

I have to say it does look like fun.
I'd settle for just sitting out there watching. :-)

Check the videos that the guys from Live Storm Chasing posted yesterday and early today. That’s where I found out about it.

Sorry the farmers have had their harvesting inturrupted. I hope the crops won’t be ruined.

Hi radu!

No snow but still durn cold.

We will get back to warmer temps this week thankfully, still have some outdoor projects to accomplish.

We always get a lot of sun even in the fall/winter so it makes the seasons more bearable.

I haven’t seen the evening news the past several days and they probably brought it up. I’m behind on all kinds of news these days. Not realizing that kind of weather was hitting, I didn’t think to check to see what the storm chasers had posted. Watching one of the videos now. That was a bad one.

I’ll take snow over an ice storm ANY day.

Great that you missed out on the snow. It makes having to deal with cold temps even harder to bear. BRRRRRR
At least you have a warm-up coming so you can work on those projects without freezing your hiney off.

Our winter isn’t supposed to be very cold this year, courtesy of La Niña. It’s giving us an actual autumn for a change rather than a jump from summer into winter. Works for us!
