Study: Meth Use Is the Biggest Factor for HIV Seroconversion Among Gay and Bisexual Men

Persistent use of methamphetamine is the single biggest risk factor for HIV seroconversion among gay and bisexual men, according to a new study published in the Journal of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndromes. Using subjects from across the U.S., including Puerto Rico and Guam, researchers found that over 12 months of follow-up, 14% of study participants reported using meth, and 2.5% tested positive for HIV (115 new infections). More than a third of study participants (36%) seroconverting for HIV were persistent users of methamphetamine.

No surprise to us who are paying attention, but expect this to be papered over pretty quickly.

Revealing sentence: “Although use of meth has declined in the general U.S. population, it is again rising among gay and bisexual men. Studies have shown that gay men are four times more likely to try meth than straight men.”

I didn’t know what it was & looked it up so I’ll share:

Seroconversion is the time in which a person develops antibodies to any disease-causing microorganisms (called pathogens). Antibodies are the defensive proteins produced by the immune system to neutralize a pathogen and is specific to that pathogen and that pathogen alone.

When blood tests are able to detect these antibodies, a person is said to have seroconverted.

In the case of HIV, seroconversion means that a person has gone from being HIV-negative (having no HIV antibodies) to being HIV-positive (having HIV antibodies).

Seroconversion is confirmed by an HIV antibody test. It usually takes a few weeks for the body to produce enough antibodies for the test to confirm an HIV-positive diagnosis. Prior to this, the test may either be inconclusive or deliver a false-negative result. This period of uncertainty is known as the window period.

Once a person has seroconverted, he or she will always be HIV-positive for life. Even if the person is placed on HIV therapy and is able to achieve an undetectable viral load, the virus never fully disappears. “Undetectable” simply means that the amount of virus is the blood is so low that currently, available blood tests are unable to detect them.

It is important to remember that HIV and its effects have nothing to do with the behavior of its victims. /s

That sicko in Santa Monica (Ed Buck) was giving his sex partners meth. The more you learn, the worse it gets...

So what is the gist of this story? That meth use speeds up or increases the likelyhood of seroconversion?

“That meth use speeds up or increases the likelyhood of seroconversion?”

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Yes (from my reading of the article) ... more likely to get HIV (as indicated by seroconversion/being positive for HIV antibodies) if you’re using meth .... for all the reasons they listed in the article & more or less summarized as “nexus of sex, meth, and gay identity”.

The appearance of “HIV” in the title should give you a pretty good contextual idea of the meaning.

“Infected” is the less “nice” way to put it.

I’m shocked that the article didn’t implicate normal people in society for driving homosexual men into meth use by being so “homophobic.”

Somebody using meth is not likely to be careful about practicing safe sex.
