Chuck Schumer’s Last Stand: Forces Rare Closed-Door Session to Protest Barrett Nomination

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) forced a brief but rare closed-door session in the Senate on Friday as part of the Democrats’ last-ditch effort to protest Judge Amy Coney Barrett’s forthcoming confirmation, just one day after Senate Judiciary Republicans voted her out of committee.

“Whoa…Schumer just forced the Senate into a rare closed door session. No cameras. No press. Doors being locked as I type,” Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) announced Friday morning, describing it as a “last ditch effort to convince Republicans to not send the Senate into this death spiral of power politics.”

“If the roles were reversed, he’d do the same thing Mitch is doing...”

If the roles were reversed, he’d have not had hearings and just went to the approval vote. Boom. F the Repub’s. Everyone knows it.

Wow, imagine the primary between Schumer and Ocasio-Cortez.

On the one hand, would be nice to see Schumer forced out of the Senate. On the other hand, would be nice to see Schumer dispose of a radical such as Ocasio-Cortez. She is poised to be a major leader of the Democrat party, if she stays in Congress for years and years.

Odds are the winner of such a Democrat primary will will election to the Senate in 2022.

The GOP knows failure to get this done is a death sentence for the party.

Or they should......

This is the party, that BEFORE RBG died, said they would pack the Court:

2020 Dems warm to expanding Supreme Court
A series of White House hopefuls are expressing new interest in remaking the courts — payback for Republican aggression during the Obama presidency.

Dems don’t need to pack the court. All they need is Roberts and one of Gorsuch/Kavanaugh and it is 5-4 even with ACB.

Not really. Dems fight for every inch of the political battlefield in support of their agenda. The GOP does not.

Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) announced Friday morning, describing it as a “last ditch effort to convince Republicans to not send the Senate into this death spiral of power politics.”

Dear deluded Senator Murphy, you joined the US Senate on 3 January 2013 so you were there when YOUR DEMOCRATIC PARTY SENATE MAJORITY LEADER, Senator Harry Reid (D-NV), went against copious warnings and invoked mere majority vote for approving Federal Judges. It was November of 2013 when Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) warned “You’ll regret this, and you may regret this a lot sooner than you think!"

Like plucking a pebble from a mountain slope, this avalanche is all yours and your fellow Democratic Asses! In this same position with the positions reversed, we all KNOW you would be doing this very thing with no qualms! You just show us the depths of your regret and idiocy. STUFF IT!

Hillary would have named AOC to the court. Or someone younger.

Just imagine what the court would have looked like with Hillary picks.

As another FReeper pointed out on another thread, having Judge ACB confirmed is a good thing.

Having her confirmed prior to the election is a great thing.

Having her confirmed on Hillary's birthday (10/26) is priceless.

I'm guessing that an executive session doesn't count against the 48 hour notice for the floor vote.

As long as Schumer keeps the Senate in closed session, they can't debate the Barrett nomination. That pushes the time line out for as long as they stay closed.

Just my guess.

The adjourned, not recessed. BIG difference in “rules.” Adjourned means until tomorrow. Recessed means “shut down.”

All sorts of things can happen during a recess.

It’s the Democrats fault that the filibuster is gone and they can’t stop this nominee.

It's great, isn't it? The Dems may have inadvertently saved the Republic they're trying to destroy.
