‘Don’t Get Gaggled’: Minneapolis School District Spends Big on Student Surveillance Tool, Raising Ire After Terminating Its Police Contract

Gaggle is currently used in hundreds of districts across the U.S., relying on artificial intelligence and a team of moderators paid as little as $10 an hour to scan billions of student emails, chat messages and files each year in search of references to sex, drugs and violence.

WOW, hiring $10 an hour monitors to look at high school children’s emails and other social media. What could go wrong?

...and what will the AI tell them when a perp slams a vehicle through the security doors - enters the schools - and there is no one armed to counter the threat?

..is this AI ever present in the kids life - in his/her home? - is it there on their social media - if so, who signed away those rights to be monitored 24/7...

what the ones that plot and plan with out using mobile devices - no Internet — what will the AI do then?

Actually having a physical person there is the only and truly way of countering other physical threats...

It seems to me - that these liberal/leftists want another school shooting.. since COVID - there haven’t been any...

Wonder if Samantha and Chris are on this team of ‘ modulators’ and just what other so-called just us they will be meeting out?
The majority will sort out any true misfits among us no problem, leave the police alone and let them do their job too.

By now (I am sure 12 seconds has elapsed) the kids have developed a code the AI cannot fathom.

Internet Cockney of some sort.

They should have a good legal adviser to screen for employee abuses. Jeffrey Toobin may soon be available.

Exactly. The school has no right to monitor pivate communication, only school provided services.

I have a poker buddy who works for this company. He thinks it’s the greatest thing since sliced bread. The school requires all their emails and passwords as well as social media passwords. This is surveillance state just like communist China. He touts that it saved many kids who were contemplating suicide.
I think this is over reach and if it comes to my kids I’d pull them from the district over this type of monitoring.
I do enjoy beating him at cards from time to time. He is a good player who plays far more than I do so it’s uncommon for me to take his money all the time.

Sometimes you have to wonder if this is the master plan to get people on board for the socialist America that is coming once President Trump is gone in four years.

How can the school force them to give up their passwords?

Oddly enough, the Google playstore advertises Gaggle as a secure and anonymous chat app so you can say whatever you want.

Many school districts provide laptops or tablets to kids. So the device is owned by the school district. Thus they can legally require students to give up their privacy so they can get a shiny new, cool tablet to carry around.

When I worked for a large corporation they issued laptops to technicians. Those laptops had key loggers and other surveillance tools on them so the company could monitor their use. We advised new hires of this fact and told them to never use the laptop for personal stuff. They had to sign forms acknowledging these facts. Yet we still had a couple every year who used them to view porn and got fired.

If I was in that situation, I am 100% sure I would be happy to give them a burner email userid and password, but the real one would never be given up. Secure communications with friends would be very easy in this day and age. All multi-person games have internal chats, for example. Then there are encrypted communication apps.

Kids use Snapchat in which the snaps and messages disappear immediately upon reading. I couldn’t pull up a snap or message unless I saved it or took a screenshot. Can the monitoring program read snaps after they’re gone?

I have to admit Deloitte (my ex employer) was right about one thing: they needed young people who live on that narcissist nonsense called “social media.” I never could figure any of it out. I have an unused fb account I need for my Quest headset and an unused twitter account I need to read tweets embedded in the articles we have here.

These are non de plumes — I deleted my RL fb a long time ago.

Never had a Twatter account and I read all the twaats posted here.

If it offers a *refresh* option, that has always worked for me or you can just refresh the page. If the T prompt says *try again*, just go back to the referring page and click again. (helps if you have links appear in another window.) 2nd click always works.

Some of the twitter threads cannot be read by non-twitterers.

I eventually threw up my hands and created a fake ID.
