Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga and his Vietnamese counterpart Nguyen Xuan Phuc have agreed to step up security and economic cooperation with Tokyo set to export defence equipment and technology to Hanoi amid Chinas growing influence in the region.
Suga, who is on his first overseas trip since becoming prime minister last month, called Vietnam a linchpin in efforts to realise a free and open Indo-Pacific and vowed Japans continued contribution to peace and prosperity in the region.
He also criticised actions in the South China Sea that go against the rule of law, a veiled reference to Beijings increasing assertiveness in the disputed waters. It is important that all nations involved work toward a peaceful resolution of conflicts in the South China Sea without resorting to force or coercion, Suga said in a speech at the Vietnam Japan University.
Following a one-hour meeting with Phuc, Suga said the countries had agreed in principle on a defence pact, though details were not immediately available.
Japan has been looking to boost its sales of advanced military technology including the likes of amphibious assault vehicles, underwater drones, and minehunting technology since its 2014 lifting of a self-imposed ban on exporting weapons systems. Besides Vietnam, Japan has also been in discussions with Thailand and Indonesia over arms sales.
Analysts say the security agreement is also part of Japans attempts to stand up to China in the South China Sea, where Beijing is embroiled in territorial disputes with Southeast Asian nations including Vietnam, Malaysia and the Philippines.
The equipment, likely including patrol planes and radar, would help improve Vietnams surveillance capabilities. Hanois claims in the disputed waterway include the Spratly Islands, where China is building up a military presence.

What a cool map :)
Some of that yellow overlaps.
That ain’t good.
China bringing former enemies together. Cool.
The whole world should follow suit...especially when it comes to no longer buying their stuff.
Never thought Id get sentimental and wish a Jap battleship Force world steam into the area at night ... the way they used to.
It will be important to have an ally of necessity on the Asian Mainland. No love for China in VN. China has reason for growing concern about the gathering of an alliance to contain her territorial and hegemonic ambitions.
Japan: "Give me Phuc!"
China: "No Xi? What the Phuc?"
And to say that before they wean themselves off, in order to counteract the nukes threatening them from China & Rocketman-Land, they will develop their own ballistic nukes to be deployed on EACH of their territories.
Let China just go ahead & try to execute a perfect First Strike against ALL of them simultaneously. Many of those nations have numerous islands they can install silos on. And many, many cities to be hit. OTOH, China knows that if even a half dozen nukes hit their biggest cities, their economy is toast for at least a generation. This ought to make them think twice about threats of force against their neighbors.
And how long would it take for technologically advanced nations like Japan with some help from S Korea to develop their own version of the Trident sub, which is 45 yr old technology now?
Wow you have a long FR name.
It’s a good one.
Mine is the initials and month and day of an ex’s birthday.
Who knew we’d split? :)
Yeah some have written that China has prepared underground facilities for a large number of people to live for several years so that they can “win” a nuclear war.
That sounds crazy to me. What would they “win”>?
And Japan and S Korea can rock and roll and get things done within a short time period.
Were they trusting that obama would defend them or even help them with materials to ward of China?
I don’t know who we have treaties with out of those countries.
Is there any country there that we have an obligation to protect if they are attacked?
Anything along the lines of a NATO?
Map overlay is wrong. Communist China claims all of the 9-dash line area.
That’s a layout of Japanese ships in 1941, not showing all they had during WWII. They had more submarine aircraft carriers than any other navy, the I-400 class being the largest ever built until the 1960’s by the U.S.A. They could surface, launch planes and then submerge again. I think the U.S.A. sunk a confiscated I-400 sub off Hawaii after the war. Too bad they didn’t save it as a museum piece.
Ping.
China has basically the same problem Russia has. One city, the country is gone. And no defense is 100% perfect. Its still a MAD situation.
Japan already has nuclear weapons and the ballistic missiles needed to deliver them. They’re just being cagey about it, like they were prior to WW2 when they kept their military power concealed until they launched their offensives. South Korea is likely to have nuclear weapons, too.
The Israelis developed nuclear weapons decades ago but didn’t claim they had them to intentionally confuse their enemies. They now actively tout the “Samson Option” which states that any nuclear attack on Israel will result in a devastating retaliatory nuclear strike launched from their sub fleet.
I am not associated with this YouTube channel in any way. This is a very informative discussion between China Uncensored and a Chinese/Taiwan defense expert. Very informative. It has obviously been banned as number of views were only 16k. It spells out everything we need to know about the CCP. We are heading to war. We should be informed. Feel free to share on your social media.

True— this is what western journalists knew Japan had in Dec of 41. I noticed the graphic is missing the Shokaku class and the Yamato (secret at the time) among others. The spelling of the ship names is also strange. Around the time that Japan joined the Axis, it seems they changed the translations of their words to German (i.e. Tokyo became Tokio, Fuso became Huso, Kirishima became Kirisima, etc).
Yes, Japan had toyed with the idea of using the I-400 class late in the war to launch air raids on the US mainland, but were hesitant fearing US revenge (over and above the napalm raids).
