Remote learning appears to have choked off some back-to-school spendingalthough the effects have been uneven.
Data released from the Department of Labor on prices paid by consumers and received by businesses suggest that this years back-to-school spending was anemic in several categories. Consumers are still spendingprices rose by more than expected in September, a sign of healthy demandbut not on many categories that traditionally benefit from back to school shopping.

Unexpected!
I was just in Target and noticed that the Halloween costume aisles are still full - I remember by this time last year it had been cleaned out - I mean it was fully stocked and didn’t look like a single Halloween costume had even been sold. Not a single person was browsing the aisles.
Same for the cat and dog costumes.
Last week Target sent me an email promoting 20% off Halloween costumes. When they send that in early October you know they’re not making a holiday profit this year.
Why on earth would anyone waste money on back to school spending for remote learning? Unless its for a faster internet connection....
Halloween is something I would not lose a minute of sleep if it went away forever.
I’ve been in stores. Among my observations:
* candy’s selling, costumes aren’t
* fall themed food is actually more popular from orange icing on cookies to pumpkin flavored everything
* the Halloween sections are smaller than they used to be
* they have already put up some Christmas stuff in the grocery store
* the Christmas section in Lowes’ is bigger than the Halloween
Holidays are verboten by quasiroyal decrees.
Christmas sections are always bigger than Halloween. I worked in retail for a decade and between the two there is no comparison. Christmas makes or breaks your year.
Our local schools are already back in person in full force. The Catholic school opened Aug 1. Local schools reopened last month. NO PROBLEM. School buses running. I heard that Austin schools are reluctant about opening. We are in a tiny town N W of Austin, but inside Travis County.
Schools are OPEN here in person. No problem.
The election may be won or lost by Karens. The Karens fuel Covid and BLM agendas.
I can tell you that about 80% of all Californian K-college students are still 100% remote. This is millions of students.
LA Unified is the second largest school district in the nation and I believe it is still 100% remote except for a few special needs elem kids.
Kids have enough pajammas to go to school at home, no need for book covers or pencil boxes either, shocking, I know.
Meanwhile, Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas will all be cancelled, ‘for the children’, ayep
Im tutoring a kid whos been in school virtually until last week. Now its half and half.
Its horrific. The kid is doing terribly.
On the other hand, its been my favorite holiday since childhood. Christmas was a distant third when I was a kid.
“Halloween is something I would not lose a minute of sleep if it went away forever.”
Ditto.
All Hallows’ Eve has been hijacked by retailers, narcissistic parents, and satanist.
I’m with you there.
Some people can stand to not spend hundreds of dollars on clothes for a new school year.
I shudder when I remember how much my parents had to spend on one little boy + a preteen, and another fashion conscious high school girl, just to go to school.
I can tell you that about 80% of all Californian K-college students are still 100% remote.

The schools in my part of California are open for business.
