Graham Takes Lead Over Harrison in South Carolina Amid Supreme Court Confirmation Fight
Morning Consult ^ | BY ELI YOKLEY October 13, 2020

South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham has opened up a lead over Jaime Harrison following the death of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, becoming one of a handful of Republican incumbents to see his standing improve amid the fight over appointing a new justice to the high court.

New Morning Consult Political Intelligence tracking conducted Oct. 2-11 found Graham leads his Democratic opponent by 6 percentage points, 48 percent to 42 percent, among 903 likely voters in South Carolina — a notable improvement from his margins over the past few months, when he was either trailing or tied with his well-funded challenger. The latest poll has a margin of error of 3 points.

Republican Sens. David Perdue of Georgia, John Cornyn of Texas have also improved their standing since Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg died on Sept. 18.

Meanwhile, Democrats have expanded their lead in Colorado, and maintain the upper hand in Arizona, Michigan and North Carolina.

He would never in a million years kept his Senate chairmanship had he been a Democrat and not supported the ticket.

How does that even make any sense given that
1. Graham did not run in 2016
And 2, Graham was a GOP Senator long, long, before Trump even thought of running and was in the Republican Party when Trump was still a Democrat,

I thought that would happen. Democrats wasting a lot of money they could have spent elsewhere.

J*sus tap dancing Ch*ist!! This type of mentality is why we have an impossible time forming governing majorities in the short & long term! There's always that group of folks who say: "not pure enough". By those standards Trump wouldn't pass muster because he used to be pro choice & pro a lot of things we don't like- but has had a change of heart in the last decade. I'm fairly sure he's admitted for voting for quite a few Democrats in the past. I'm not in love with Lindsey on every issue by a long shot, but for crying out loud- he's obviously better for our side in the short or long term than 99% of Democrats out there. So is Susan Collins. I'll take Collins over any Democrat every day of the week & twice on Sunday. Would she be my choice in the primaries- NO!!! But in the general, if it meant control of the Senate & one less automatic party line vote for communist asshattery- Yes, I'd vote for her. On every political test I've ever taken, im always off the charts due to how right-wing my views are. That being said- I'm realistic about the fact that 99.9% of people are inevitably more moderate than me. The best chance we have is making our best argument for our beliefs & winning over a governing majority in the process. Throwing out the impure results in permanent minority status. Use your head! 🤔

You’ve got backwards.

I voted for Romney. I voted for McCain.

Lindsay Graham, a sitting GOP Senator, refused to vote for POTUS in 2016 to the benefit of Hillary Clinton and her Constitution destroying SCOTUS.

The problem is not GOP base voters like me. The problem is swamp “Republicans” we elect colluding with progressive Democrats to hamstring POTUS and block the MAGA agenda.

Direct your ire where it belongs and hold them accountable. Or prepare to live in California. Because California is our future thanks to policies supported by Lindsay Graham and the swamp GOP. Period.

Joe Biden can’t draw flies in Michigan. I think Reagan Denocrats and Independents in Michigan will carry the day.

I made a slight error in my earlier post, with the NYT having James one point behind Peters (compared to a ten point deficit earlier in the summer) and another poll earlier in the month with James being one or two points ahead. However, I still agree with what you say about James (and Trump) possibly doing very well with Reagan Democrats and Independents.

“Concerning Michigan, even the NYT now says James has the lead over the Dem incumbent.”

That was my understanding, too. Close, but with James slightly ahead.

Yes, those colluding Never Trumper types you talk about are a big problem in most ways. But an equally big problem are people who adopt purity tests as a response. I have a severe distaste for the so-called "conservatives" that oppose anything Trump- George Will, Allahpundit, George Conway, etc. because they are actively supporting Biden & Democrats. Those aren't the people I'm talking about. Those are people that have verifiably signed up for our enemy because they hate Trump. The John Kacziks of the world can die for all I care. I considered Lindsey Graham one of them in 2016. He has largely redeemed himself since. I still hate his immigration laxity. But is he helping us & our president form a majority now- yes! Writing him off because of 2016 screws us. If people like you don't vote for him, he loses his race & we lose the Senate. We've lost any ability to influence part of a branch of government. Democrats get their court picks through- we lose. Democrats pass socialized medicine- we lose. Democrats allow nationwide mail in fraud with no oversight- we lose everything. Get over petty bullcrap arguments with Graham & Collins. Collins helped turn the tide in favor of Kavanaugh. She only favors our positions 2/3 of the time, but would you prefer a Democrat that opposes every single thing we believe in. You want to hate the Never Trumpers- I am right there with you. But hating the moderates whose votes give us majorities in controlling things is counterproductive. If we end up in the minority because someone throws a hissy fit, we all get screwed. We need to stop screwing ourselves! 🤷🏼

[Lindsey was never in danger of losing this seat. The Democrats are going to get utterly destroyed in SC and lose 2 to 3 house seats.]

House seats in SC?

Agree - actually dropped him $25 because what would be worse than having Lindsey in the seat is to have Harrison in the seat.

These hearings are the best thing to happen to Graham. Boosted his chances for reelection. But, I doubt he will be such staunch conservative after Trump is re-elected and he is looking towards his own political future.
