To avoid discussion of politics, my housemate and I have spent the evenings viewing DVDs of Wagner operas. Tonight we finished the second disk of "The Valkyrie," the second opera in Wagner's 4-part "The Ring of the Niebelung" series. It has as its source material the same thing that Tolkien used for "The Lord of the Rings," which we watched in segments just as did the 3-part DVDs of "The Hobbit" prequel before that. It keeps us occupied in the evenings. This is the final scene from what we watched this evening.

Hildegard Behrens (1937-2009) was a fascinating Brunnhilde. She was tiny, a real cutie-pie, but what a voice!

I moved from the Phoenix area to San Luis Obispo County in California to help take care of a lady friend whom I've known for 35 years. She lost her oldest son, suffered a stroke and then lost her husband all within a narrow timeframe. She hired a woman to be her housemate but found she couldn't trust her. So I've stepped into the breach.

She's 83 and confined to a wheelchair. I'm cooking for her, so she's being fed properly for a change. I've become her primary caregiver.

I'm close to the ocean, so it's foggy and cold in the mornings, but sometimes it warms up. It's quite a change from Phoenix.
