NYC cancels $900M deferred payout to teachers, cites financial crisis

The de Blasio administration has canceled a long-scheduled $900 million deferred compensation payout to current and former teachers, citing the coronavirus-induced financial crisis.

The payout due this month — the last in the series of five stemming from union negotiations between 2009 and 2011 — was called off as the city attempts to limit the number of administration-wide layoffs, First Deputy Mayor Dean Fuleihan wrote to the teachers union Thursday.

“It is the city’s desire to avoid the necessity for layoffs, and to make a retroactive payment at this time would therefore be fiscally irresponsible,” Fuleihan wrote in a letter to Michael Mulgrew, president of the United Federation of Teachers.

Oh, so ALL NYC teachers are back in the classrooms teaching 5 days a week?

This has NOTHING to do with current NYC teachers at all. This has to do with a contract between NYC and NYC teachers signed several years ago promising the teachers in service at that time that they would receive their raises for the time they worked from 2009-2011 in increments, the latest of which was to be paid NOW, and which NYC is claiming they can't afford to pay now. So they are in breach of contract and will be sued by the union, hopefully. Pay attention!

Just goes to show, that contracts with the government aren’t worth the paper they are printed on.
