~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Joint Base Anacostia Bolling, Washington, D.C.

DCjbanacostiabolling2

Joint Base Anacostia–Bolling is a 905-acre military installation, located in Southwest, Washington, D.C. established on 1 October 2010 in accordance with congressional legislation implementing the recommendations of the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure Commission.

The legislation ordered the consolidation of Naval Support Facility Anacostia (NSF) and Bolling Air Force Base (BAFB), which were adjoining, but separate military installations, into a single joint base, one of twelve formed in the country as a result of the law. The base hosts the Defense Intelligence Agency Headquarters amongst its other responsibilities. The only aeronautical facility at the base is a 100-by-100-foot helipad.

DCjbanacostiabolling5

Joint Base Anacostia–Bolling (JBAB) is responsible for providing installation support to 17,000 military, civilian employees and their families, 48 mission and tenant units, including ceremonial units (United States Air Force Honor Guard, USAF Band, USAF Chaplains, the Navy Ceremonial Guard), various Army, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, Joint Service commands and other DOD and federal agencies.

Bolling Air Force Base units also provide ceremonial support to the White House, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the Secretary of the Air Force, and the Air Force Chief of Staff, mainly through 11th Wing, the United States Air Force Honor Guard and The United States Air Force Band.

DCjbanacostiabolling3

By 2020, more than half of the activity at Anacostia–Bolling fell under the US Air Force. Consequently, it was decided that installation management and support at the base would transfer from the US Navy to the Air Force. To facilitate the change, on 11 June 2020 the 11th Wing inactivated as the host wing at Joint Base Andrews and reactivated as the 316th Wing.

DCjbanacostiabolling6

After fifteen years of being based at Andrews, the 11th Wing returned to Anacostia-Bolling on 12 June 2020 and activated as the host wing at the base. A memorandum of agreement was signed between the Navy and the Air Force on 24 June 2020 which formalised the transition, however the Air Force did not officially take control until 1 October 2020.

Howdy, lauren.

I suppose I’ve missed you since I was late getting back. Supper got in the way. :-)

Good evening, radu...hope your allergy season is coming to a close. And hope some rain is on the horizon.

Mostly sunny today, but chilly.

Sunrise....8:22am
Sunset.....7:12pm

Getting lighter later every day, and darker earlier every day.

The nice thing about these virtual road trips is that there is no traffic.

I love it...no traffic.

Any snow yet for your fires?

Howdy, Kathy.

Allergy season is in full swing and will be for a while. It’s bad today but wasn’t yesterday. Maybe tomorrow will be another decent day.

There’s a chance for rain this weekend due to Hurricane Delta. We’ll see. It will be nice if we get it because the air is just nasty with dust.

It won’t be much longer before you have those long, dark winter nights. They’re coming fast!
It’s been a pretty day up there today with lotsa sunshine. The cam ops were nice enough to give us some good shots of Mt. Denali today.

In 1969, I was with the Whittier High School band. We were in Washington, DC to participate in the Inaugural Parade for President Richard Nixon (Whittier High School was his alma mater). We assembled on the runway at Bolling Field before we headed to Northwest DC to begin our march down Pennsylvania Ave.

I recall that the base looked as though it had been abandoned--probably because it had ceased being used for airplanes in 1962.

Missing Man Setting

"The Empty Chair"

By Captain Carroll "Lex" Lefon, USN (RET), on December 21st, 2004

"In the wardroom onboard the aircraft carrier from which I recently debarked was a small, round table, with single chair. No one ever sat there, and the reasons, both for the table being there, and for the fact that the chair was always empty, will tell the reader a little bit about who we are as a culture. The wardroom, of course, is where the officers will dine; morning, noon and evening. It is not only a place to eat – it is also a kind of oasis from the sometimes dreary, often difficult exigencies of the service. A place of social discourse, of momentary relief from the burdens of the day. The only things explicitly forbidden by inviolable tradition in the wardroom are the wearing of a cover or sword by an officer not actually on watch, or conversation which touches upon politics or religion. But aboard ships which observe the custom, another implicit taboo concerns the empty chair: No matter how crowded the room, no matter who is waiting to be seated, that chair is never moved, never taken.

The table is by the main entrance to the wardroom. You will see it when you enter, and you will see it when you leave. It draws your eyes because it is meant to. And because it draws your eyes it draws your thoughts. And though it will be there every day for as long as you are at sea, you will look at it every time and your eyes will momentarily grow distant as you think for a moment. As you quietly give thanks.

AS YOU REMEMBER.

The small, round table is covered with a gold linen tablecloth. A single place setting rests there, of fine bone china. A wineglass stands upon the table, inverted, empty. On the dinner plate is a pinch of salt. On the bread plate is a slice of lemon. Besides the plate lies a bible. There is a small vase with a single red rose upon the table. Around the vase is wound a yellow ribbon. There is the empty chair.

We will remember because over the course of our careers, we will have had the opportunity to enjoy many a formal evening of dinner and dancing in the fine company of those with whom we have the honor to serve, and their lovely ladies. And as the night wears on, our faces will in time become flushed with pleasure of each other’s company, with the exertions on the dance floor, with the effects of our libations. But while the feast is still at its best, order will be called to the room – we will be asked to raise our glasses to the empty table, and we will be asked to remember:

The table is round to show our everlasting concern for those who are missing. The single setting reminds us that every one of them went to their fates alone, that every life was unique.

The tablecloth is gold symbolizing the purity of their motives when they answered the call to duty.

The single red rose, displayed in a vase, reminds us of the life of each of the missing, and their loved ones who kept the faith.

The yellow ribbon around the vase symbolizes our continued determination to remember them.

The slice of lemon reminds us of the bitterness of their fate.
The salt symbolizes the tears shed by those who loved them.
The bible represents the faith that sustained them.
The glass is inverted — they cannot share in the toast.
The chair is empty — they are not here. They are missing.

And we will remember, and we will raise our glasses to those who went before us, and who gave all that they had for us. And a part of the flush in our faces will pale as we remember that nothing worth having ever came without a cost. We will remember that many of our brothers and sisters have paid that cost in blood. We will remember that the reckoning is not over.

We many of us will settle with our families into our holiday season, our Christmas season for those who celebrate it, content in our fortune and prosperity. We will meet old friends with smiles and laughter. We will meet our members of our family with hugs. We will eat well, and exchange gifts and raise our glasses to the year passed in gratitude, and to the year to come with hope. We will sleep the sleep of the protected, secure in our homes, secure in our homeland.

But for many families, there will be an empty chair at the table this year. A place that is not filled.

WE SHOULD REMEMBER."

Many Thanks To Alfa6 For Finding Capt. Lefon's Chronicle Of "The Empty Chair."

Howdy do, Conor. *HUGZ*

Monday. *sigh* Back to the ol’ grind. I hope you were still able to get a lot of steps in, preferably outside in the fresh air.

Good evening, Army Bro!

I watched Air Force demolish Navy and Army demolish Abilene Christian Saturday. After watching those blowouts I will not under any circumstances hazard a wager on Army-Navy.

Great road trip, lauren! Hope you and your family are doing well. We went to WY to see the kids recently, and it was so good to see our girls and how they've grown--they are 13 and 7. Piper is now taller than I am. I know...not hard to do, but STILL! LOL!

It’s great to see you too! You were away so long and it’s nice to have you stopping in again.

Nice that the weather is behaving so you can get out for long walks. MUCH more fun than just walking around inside.

We have beautiful weather but with no rain lately and farmers all over the county harvesting, it’s impossible to spend much time outside. Dust is so thick, it’s choking. Ugh!

WOW! Look at how tall Piper is now! The difference in their height is much more than last year.
Maybe Callie has more of your genes? :-)

Hiya radu!

Lazy, typical weekend, went and visited Robin and the pups, just a few early morning errands today but lovely, warm Fall weather prevails.

Any news your way?

Hi Navy Bro, I didn't see the same games you saw but still enjoyed the couple of college football games I watched Saturday.

Nice to see my beloved Army team do well, perhaps a great match-up for the upcoming Navy-Army game?
