This is a big geopolitical triumph for them. I live in the Philippines, and the deaths from covid are a lot fewer than deaths from other diseases like Dengue fever. But the economy is essentially shut down: In our rural area, we have finally reopened shopping etc last month but Manila and other big cities are still on lockdown. Soon we could see starvation in our unemployed. Even if the vaccine kills one out of ten thousand, or doesn't always work, it could let the government to reopen the economy.Duterte is hoping to get vaccines from the USA, but also checking with China and Russia. The public health authorities would prefer the USA vaccine, but if it means a six month delay, they will have to admit defeat and buy from China or Russia.
And multiply this dilemma by a lot of other countries.
In the meanwhile, anti Trump politics and the anti vax idiots (who are by the way, echoing Russian anti vax disinformation in the social media) are stopping US companies from releasing a safer, tested vaccine.
The media will continue to stress the bad Trump is planning to release a vaccine prematurely to kill people, at least until the election The day after the election, if Biden wins, you will see them change their tactics and say see Joe Biden is saving lives. If Trump wins, they will continue their disinformation campaign.
