CDC ranks Thanksgiving activities by COVID-19 risk: No gatherings with out of town relatives or Black Friday shopping

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) – When many people envision Thanksgiving they think of large family dinners followed by Black Friday shopping sprees.

However, with the coronavirus pandemic still at large, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is recommending people alter their celebrations this year with safety in mind. This includes smaller gatherings and not traveling for the holiday.

“Thanksgiving is a time when many families travel long distances to celebrate together,” the CDC said on its website. “Travel increases the chance of getting and spreading the virus that causes COVID-19. Staying home is the best way to protect yourself and others. If you must travel, be informed of the risks involved.”

The CDC has ranked actives into three categories – lower risk, moderate risk, and higher risk.

Here’s how the CDC ranks each Thanksgiving tradition:

Lower risk activities

Moderate risk activities

Higher risk activities

No one will accept a “new normal”!
Whatever is pushed for this outbreak is a temporary adjustment.

The “new normal” meme is destructive.

Sometimes pets are much better company than people. You can talk politics with your pets. Hard to believe Thanksgiving is next month already. One thing I learned since I retired in 2003, is that time goes by a hell of a lot faster the older you get. Take care, and enjoy the holidays when you get the chance.

I do not take the CDC seriously any longer. And I certainly do not go to them to tell me how I can interact on Thanksgiving Day. Or any other day. I survived the kong flu back in January when it went through our small Kansas town. So did everyone else who had it that I have knowledge of. Just before my 71st birthday. Fortunately our county did not go all mask nazi as our sheriff has brains. Lots of Trump yard signs and flags. I suspect lots of prayers for the full and prompt recovery of President Trump, as well.

Every time my daughter and her children travel, they pick up some kind of bug. They get the flu shot each year, and they get the flu. Last Christmas, they all had the flu while at our house. They brought it with them, and it went through one by one. Son in law was very ill. Maybe with mask wearing and good hand washing, they can visit without bringing a plague. Hah. They are almost to ages which develop immunity to most bugs.

We had a wedding a month ago - 80 people. It was at home & outdoors, not due to virus, but because it was the wedding the bride has wanted since she was a child. Reasonable precautions were taken: masks available if you wanted one, hand sanitizer, food was served to tables family style (no large buffet). We ate, drank, danced to a live band in a beautiful tent & it was, as many told us, the “best wedding ever”. For many, it was their first time really “out” & the social isolation had been taking a toll. It’s been a month & no one at the wedding got COVID.

Thanksgiving family gathering & meal is huge with our family. We plan on doing it as we have in years past. I would have the same message as you for the CDC.

Well, I have had two clients notify me their usual holiday travel isn’t going to happen. Both elderly adults and have their reasons.

Otherwise my younger, affluent group is cautiously booking and reserving travel dates. This group lives in luxury apartments and many are still stuck as work from home. Cabin fever will set in here very soon as the weather turns from autumn to the cold, harsh Cleveland winter.

There are two kinds of travelers right now. Are they going ‘home’ for the holidays? It remains to be determined. It looks more like they will be home for the dinner, but then sight-seeing etc. Staying in hotels, not in residence. It looks a little different this year. A lot of driving, even in the younger folks.

I do believe it will look different. How much to Covid or to mayhem in the streets remains to be seen.

Having a small outdoor dinner with family and friends who live in your community

Peace-pipe optional?

I fully expect a new edict from Governor Coon Man after the election to “prevent” this exact situation.

Killing thanksgiving and Christmas. This has turned out to be a major tool in their toll box to destroy any remnant of a civil society, American foundations.
