The report lays bare the extent of the pandemic’s fiscal impact on one of the city’s lifeblood industries, which only saw a return to indoor dining on Wednesday — at a meager 25-percent of normal seating capacity.

“The industry is challenging under the best of circumstances, and many eateries operate on tight margins,” said DiNapoli. “Now they face an unprecedented upheaval that may cause many establishments to close forever.”

Here's a scenario that would have seemed outlandish just a few months ago but isn't so far-fetched right now:

Saks Fifth Avenue becomes Saks Martin Luther King Boulevard ... and the Trump Organization turns Trump Tower into Section 8 housing.

“And every one of them will eventually reopen under new management.”

Doubt it. But watch who buys the properties.

I passed a restaurant the other day. The sign read Thanks for a great 57 years.

Pathetic.

Why would anyone want to risk everything NOW on a restaurant that can be shut down at will by the state or local authorities for any perceived health scare?

Now that they got this power they will continue to use it again and again.

You would have to be a nut to open a business in New York.

Coronovirus isn't causing the restaurants' problems.

The unconstitutional actions of the governor and mayor are causing those problems.

All those democrat voters in nyc deserve the government they are now getting.

The democrat voters are completely responsible for the destruction democrat politicians reign down on their population.

Bill de Blasio yesterday: During yesterday’s briefing, de Blasio said, “Anyone who is not wearing a face covering will be offered one, will be reminded it is required. And anyone who refuses to wear a face covering will be told that if they don’t put one on, they will be fined, and anyone who still refuses will be fined.”

I’m not saying it’s a good idea, I’m just predicting what will happen. Two different things.

Exactly. Between the risk of being unaccountably shut down, and having been bled dry of your capital and personal resources over the last few supporting a space you’re not allowed to use...who in their right might would try to build a business in this environment?

Under normal circumstances, I would agree on the “green shoots” theory. This current situation is like dumping dioxin and salt on the earth they’re supposed to plant.

Right now, between the shutdown, the riots, and the fact that large portions of the population will be working from house from now on, where are these restaurants going to get the business to keep them afloat?

Right now, I see no way any new business can open and make money to pay the high cost of business in NYC, while having less business, getting burned out, and probably experience roving shutdowns from now on, as these fascist dictators exert total control they have been given to decide who is “essential” and who is not!

My pet peeve is blaming everything on Covid-19.

Why can't they get it straight--none of this is due to Covid-19, but instead, to the hysterical response to this virus by mostly Democrat Mayors and Governors!!!

“When things go back to normal, and they eventually will, those spaces that are already prepped for kitchen vent hoods, etc., will become prime real estate again for the next hot chef that wants to open his own restaurant.”

So because someone may land up buying someone else’s life work for pennies on the dollar in some of the empty restaurants spaces, that means that they are all coming back?

Alrighty then.

So dumb.
