Trump claims in debate ‘Portland Sheriff’ gave him endorsement; Reese quickly responds: I ‘will never support him’

President Donald Trump during Tuesday night’s debate said he secured the endorsement of the “Portland sheriff” -- presumably a reference to Multnomah County Sheriff Mike Reese.

Reese shortly after tweeted that was false. “In tonight’s presidential debate the President said the ‘Portland Sheriff’ supports him," Reese said on Twitter. "As the Multnomah County Sheriff I have never supported Donald Trump and will never support him.”

I don’t think he misspeaks any more than any other president. He does however make himself available to a hostile press far more than any other president and when you do that, you will make some mistakes. I’ve also seen a lot of times when the media quote him and the quote is totally made up or wrong and I know it because I saw/heard him make the statement.

I mostly love the guy, but he misspeaks much too often. Then they accuse him of lying.

They will accuse him of lying if he says the sky is blue. What is interesting about this situation is that I bet no one in the Multnomah area knew that their sheriff was a leftwing whackjob until Trump said this. Trump is really good at getting morons to show their true colors, even if he does it by accident.

He’s run on a no-party affiliation, so he apparently doesn’t like to take sides. He can’t get off the fence. I would be very uneasy working for someone who doesn’t support the candidate that is pushing for law and order. I’d think he doesn’t have my back.

"He’s trying to save his job. If he hadn’t said this he would be gone by end of day."

He's elected. Ran with no party affiliation. I wouldn't want to work for him that's for sure.

I don’t believe the Police chief supports him. I believe he was thinking of Kenosha.

He’s trying to save his job. If he hadn’t said this he would be gone by end of day.

He probably wants to sue for slander that someone (Trump) said he supported Trump. "Those is fightin' words, varmint. Take it back."

He probably thought just as you said, he'd be sitting by a burned out slag heap of 2021 pickup in front of his looted and burned house and feverishly looking at job ads on his cell phone. Leftist Marxists are so tolerant./S

Trump has been endorsed by:
Greg Barreto, member of the Oregon House of Representatives from the 58th District (2015–present)[157]
Vikki Breese-Iverson, member of the Oregon House of Representatives from the 55th District (2019–present)[157]
E. Werner Reschke, member of the Oregon House of Representatives from the 56th District (2017–present)[157]

International Union of Police Associations, representing 19,200[429]
National Association of Police Organizations, representing 362,000[432]
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Donald_Trump_2020_presidential_campaign_endorsements

The Fraternal Order of Police, the largest police union in the U.S.
https://thehill.com/homenews/campaign/515110-largest-police-union-endorses-trump-for-re-election

since most police belong to one of the above assn.’s, it would seem that the Multnomah sheriff is pretty much out of step with his own guys.

full disclosure: the Portland DA, the one refusing to prosecute the pantifa rioters, has endorsed Biden

I agree. President Trump actually provides a lot of detail - specifics. He rattles off lists and usually gets it right. He always knows what state he is in - unlike some people. He doesn’t mix up thousands with billions. He remembers the names of foreign leaders.

He reminds me of my grandfather, who had a great memory for facts and figures, dates, names, and places.

I really don’t see how you can describe him as someone who “mispeaks”.

Do you guys not see how this works? Trump’s “slip of the tongue” serves only to bring more attention to his mountain of support from law enforcement.

Trump’s game, admittedly, is still mostly above my head, but I’m having the time of my life in the attempt to catch up!

Note first that Portland does NOT HAVE A SHERIFF. So the fact check is false — this guy is not the sheriff of the city of portland, so he cannot “refute” an endorsement that doesn’t mention him.

Second, Trump clearly meant the Westmoreland Sheriff, not the Portland Sheriff. There IS a Westmoreland Sheriff, he was a democrat, and he just endorsed Trump and became a republican.

So the CORRECT fact check would be “Trump confuses Portland and Westmoreland when touting a Sheriff endorsement.”

I don’t think so. I can’t find any evidence of it.

If this had been Obama, the exchange would have been:

“The portland sheriff just endorsed me”
Wallace: “You of course mean the Kenosha Sheriff, Portland doesn’t have a sheriff”
Trump:”Right, he was a democrat.”
Wallace: “Oh, you mean the Westmoreland Sheriff who endorsed you and switched parties in Pennsylvania.
Trump “Yes, there are so many it is hard to keep track of.”

Portland doesn’t have a sheriff. Sheriff is a county position, not city. Mike Reese is sheriff of Multnomah County, Portland is in Multnomah.
