A major U.S. hospital system was hit with a cyberattack, one of the largest attacks on medical data in history, according to a report.
The computer systems for Universal Health Services failed over the weekend and have resulted in some locations filing patient information with pen and paper, according to NBC News.
Universal Health Services has more than 400 locations, mostly in the U.S., and treats millions of patients a year. The company operates in the United Kingdom, too.
The company said it was dealing with an IT security issue but reports indicate the hospital chain is experiencing a ransomeware situation with hackers demanding payment before removing malicious software and decrypting files.
We implement extensive IT security protocols and are working diligently with our IT security partners to restore IT operations as quickly as possible. In the meantime, our facilities are using their established back-up processes including offline documentation methods. Patient care continues to be delivered safely and effectively, the statement said.

Should be treated as a capital offense, even terrorism, with extreme prejudice. Patients may die without proper and accurate data, so ... heads on spikes would be reasonable.
A company known for developing ransomware software sold a copy to someone who then decided to attack UHS.
The FBI could easily track down the group...if they really wanted to.
Information is it came from Western Europe
Cybersecurity, one of the biggest challenges facing our country, and Chrissy wallace never brought it up in the debate instead preferring the fake global warming crisis or the right wing threat to our security.
Alright, who’s downloading emojis?! Really people, stop getting free crap off the net to make your browser “special” it’s all malware.
And lest we forget HOW the vast majority of these “ransomware” bugs get transmitted... SOMEBODY opened an email and allowed the execution of the code...
ESPECIALLY on work computers...
Wasnt the 911 system out in several states too?
Maybe these incidents are connected and it was some type of a dry run by CCP and their buddies Soros Gates Fauci Obama....etc.
Deep state going to create another incident to remove Trump.
The 911 was a Microsoft Azure outage that affected a number of corporations.
Because they know President Trump WILL WIN REELECTION.
Maybe one of these days the medical system providers of software will treat it like a real system that needs protecting
Incredible that such a large corporation cannot reinstall their data from a firewalled cloud storage.
One of the major problem with computerized medicine is that employees aren’t even training to do paper charting in case of emergencies.
If you or a love is ever hospitalized get a paper printout of the medicines they put you on.
A derecho came threw in 2012 and caused major power outages. Hospitals were a mess.
And the 911 system was hit a few days ago.
Someone is pulsing the US emergency services capability.
Could be a prelude to a really large scale attack - followed by a suppression of the entire emergency services system, maximizing human impact.
Great advice. In 2017 I went to my doc with a heart problem. After looking at an EKG, he told me to go straight to the local rural hospital ER. The ER transferred me to a cardiac specialty clinic 50 miles away.
Fortunately, my doc had given me the usual after-visit paperwork, which includes current medication.
I was fine, by the way. Nothing that a pacemaker cannot fix.
Bingo...
Still could be China or Nigeria. Could be anyone of our fine “allies”.
Yup, some IT guys appear to have been extremely lax in their duties.
Secure data backup is the first priority!
Regular folks also need to have a backup system.
Just a cheap external drive backup, preferably two backups with one being outside the home or office. (In case of fire or theft)
I bought a remote wifi router that a hard drive can be attached to. I am going to place it away from the house in an out-building and backup to that drive. I’m tired of carrying drives around every time I make a new backup.
Most people can just use large capacity thumb drives and keep one in a safety deposit box...put stuff like the family photos and scans of important documents on these thumbs.
You can get a free AES disk encryption program from here.

Just use a backup. They do have a backup right?
If not then the IT head should be put in a hospital....
